A bit of an epilogue to this thread ...

I took this knife to the post office to send it back for a refund. At the counter I couldn't bring myself to hand it over and say goodbye.

So I brought it back home and that's where its staying.

And besides, I've got three other Spydie Enduras, and between them I should be able to keep most of them going indefinitely ... and I plan to buy more lol!

Wait that's the knife? Something really doesn't add up now, because that knife doesn't belong in that box. The box is much older than the knife. Did I miss something in this thread?

I might be wrong here, I'm not an expert on Enduras but I'm pretty sure that handle shape is new enough that it should have come in the current design box, and that older gray box would have had the Endura 3 style handle with the barrel screw clip.

I'm sure someone can confirm or correct me here but I'm pretty sure the box is older than the knife. If not then maybe it's from around the time when the handle and the box both changed or something like that.

It looks like you are right. HH sent a Endura 4 in a Endura 3 box. I was sent the old box and the newer design knife. Good spot. I wouldn't have known otherwise.

As with many Spyderco changes, the change of box graphics was a rolling one, and they tend to be frugal as well, so if/when a cache of older ones turned up, they got used. If mine are any indication, they ran out of the large folder boxes first, small folder and fixed blade sizes later. Earliest red/black boxes I have are from 2nd half 2006, latest grey one is from mid 2008.

The Endura 4 was in the catalog by 2006, so it's not implausible that you have original packaging.

There was a crossover period when the Endura 4 was introduced, where the grey boxes were changed gradually to the new red/black ones. I have a Foliage green Endura 4 from 2007 (grey box) and a British Racing Green ZDP-189 from 2008 (red/black box). I also have an Endura 3 from 2002 in the grey box.

Therefore, if your E4 came in the older grey box, it doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t the original box. In your original post, it can be seen that the date code on the box end is December 2005, which likely coincides with the introduction of the E4 while the grey boxes were still in use. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks for all the useful information. The production history really adds to my interest in these knives.

I think I'll start a reference file for all the knowledge I've found from members on this thread about this particular knife - since it's my favourite design out of all the Spydie knives.

I feel like going ahead and buying another Endura now You can never have enough.
