What is the timeframe for the change over from the Gray Box to the current Red / Black box?

Not quite sure. It was before my time. 2006-2008 if I had to guess.

Oh I read wrong. I thought OP was saying they are moving away from current packaging.

My first Mule, MT01, came in a gray box and that was around 2007. So sometime after 2007 they changed to the red/black box package.

As with many Spyderco changes, the change of box graphics was a rolling one, and they tend to be frugal as well, so if/when a cache of older ones turned up, they got used. If mine are any indication, they ran out of the large folder boxes first, small folder and fixed blade sizes later. Earliest red/black boxes I have are from 2nd half 2006, latest grey one is from mid 2008.

The latest grey box that I have is a box for an MTO1P Mule Team. It is date stamped KG.
