HH were selling off a private collection so it was almost certainly a genuine mistake.

They were selling some really good, used stuff…

Glad you decided to keep it! What Spydie Knife collector would send that back thinking I need a brand new version?

Use it or keep it in the old worn out box

Ah, that explains it. Some really interesting ones there too!

Hi Tim, I thought about editing the title but I still feel its worth noting that HH sent me a 20 year old knife worth half the price of the £105 I paid that a new Endura costs and if I hadn't noticed something amiss, I'd have paid the full £105 retail price, received a lower value knife, and not been any the wiser.

But it has been sorted out now, I think. Although now I've had a chance to look inside the knife, there's a fair bit of metal corrosion along the inner back spring that isn't on any of my other Spyderco knives, some of which are close to 10 years old and haven't been sat unused for years.

I'll probably contact HH on Monday and have a chat via email and see what they can do for me. :thinking

Thanks for the information Chris. After reading the post detailing the second hand knives for sale, the knife HH sent to me isn't on the list, as they sent me a fully serrated Endura 4. It's a bit of a mystery, although despite the mixup with my order, HH did reimburse me £35 store credit, which I used on a new Endura 4, received yesterday, and in brand new boxed condition, with paperwork. Which is dreamy! :zany

Sadly after getting some time today to take a better look at the knife, there's a fair bit of corrosion on the inner. So I'm back to thinking about sending it back to HH. :spiral-eyes

I might try to get a few photos done later though its going to be difficult to photograph the issue short of taking the knife apart, which I'm not going to do.

I'm sure HH will sort something out. Bit of a ball-ache though tbh.

BTW ... when I first looked at your post, I though the list of knives were your personal collection. I went a bit like this ...:star-struck

Is it confirmed as corrosion or just dirty? If corrosion, that would definitely be more than I would accept. I hope you can get it sorted in a way that works for both you and HH.

I'm not sure of the part names or specifics Tim, but looking right down at the inner, whether its the back-spring or another part, it looks quite rough, with a raised seam running the length of the metal part and a very uneven edge at the end of the part. It's nothing like any of my other E4s, which have clear cut parts and are smooth and evenly edged.

Here's a couple of photos.

Heres the rough surface of the knife on the left of the photo, and next to it on the right is another Endura I bought about 8 years ago:

Again on the left of the photo with a knackered edge at the end on the inner part. My 8 year old ED4 is on the right:

I'll get it shipped back to HH all being well.

I was expecting to see some discoloration, etc., which I don't. I don't see corrosion, but that edge looks almost like it got peened by something. My Endura 4 K390 SE (purchased direct from Spyderco last year) doesn't look quite like that, though it's not as smooth as your older one either.

Of course, you have to do what feels best to you. I wish you the best on dealing with it.

Looking at the parts I photographed with the naked eye, there's a 'nicotine stain' discolouration around the peened area, and the length of metal leading from that is very rough and actually black in the ridges of the rough metal. Unfortunately the camera flash blasted all of that away. And next to my other two Enduras, they look like surgical steel by comparison.

I'm not too fussed about it, I'm just replying to the comments as they arise. I'm already a fan of HH where I bought the knife. It's become my go-to knife place on the web. Their customer service is top notch with replies to my emails usually with an hour (during office hours) and pleasant and accommodating staff to deal with, and two out of the three orders I placed with them had no issues ie; brand new products in brand new boxes.

Nom nom nom ... some of the goodies received this week from HH!

A new serrated Endura 4 and two Byrd Terns delivered quickly in pretty packaging. Oh I love buying my own Christmas presents! :smiling-heart-eyes

I would have preferred a brand new knife from the start, absolutely, but the old girl grew on me really fast. I went on a long internal ramble about how the knife finally gets to serve a purpose after going unused for 20 years and it felt right. It might sound silly but it felt productive as I hate waste.

But after looking at the internals (as best I could barring disassembly) There's a couple of question marks of doubt, especially as I have an 8 year old Endura and a recently received brand new Endura to compare the old girl to. Yes I could take a chance and use it, but they'll always be that niggling doubt that the internals will fail - case in point, that odd 'peened' end area on the back spring for one.

Anyway, more waffle from me on this matter but that is what a forum is for haha!

If HH will accept a return I'll have to bid her farewell, her jaws are too ferocious to have her get a cramp five years from now and chop half my hand off lol.

I will miss her, oddly enough! :neutral

Maybe take a Q Tip or something with oil or some kind of weak solvent and give that suspect area a go with it. Might be just dust from sitting around? I recently cleaned up a Southard that sat for several years in pretty much the same way. That way you can confirm if it is corrosion or just build up.

I have one of those high powered illuminating desk top magnifying lights and was able to get a good look into the knife. Sadly its definitely a stain within the metal, but, oh well, I don't want to waffle on too much more about it. I think I've gone on enough haha.

If I had an old Endura with a knackered blade that I'd set aside as spares, I'd love to replace that peened part and use the knife indefinitely, Although I love the idea of going through the years with a vintage knife and maybe adding another 20 years to its lifespan, tbh I can't be bothered trying to source the part when the simplest solution is to send it back.

I'll get her packed up and bye bye'd.
