Knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
I recently made my second purchase from Heinnie Haynes. I ordered a Spyderco Endura 4 serrated. On receiving the knife, well, the photos of what I received show a clearer picture than I can describe ....
Shabby dirty worn box:
On comparing the Endurer 4 to my original Endura 4, there are some very noticeable internal differences ....
Internals are different at the bottom of the handles (My knife is on the right) :
Different fonts on blade stamps (My blade is on the left):
On contacting Helle Haines I was told by 'Nick' that the knife I received should never have been sent out as new stock and it was in fact a knife purchased by Hellie Haines from a third party vender to be sold as clearance stock. I was offered a return or a discount on the knife and asked 'Nick' for clarification and a guarantee that the knife I received could be confirmed to be a genuine Spyderco Endura 4. I didn't receive the confirmation, instead I was told to send the knife back for refund.
So I'm asking the advice of the forum before I decide to keep or return the knife. And I wondered if anyone can confirm the knife from Helle Haines is indeed a genuine Spyderco or not worth keeping and best returned to Heinnie Haynes.
I'd appreciate any advice before I make a decision.
Many thanks.

Dear SpydieCollector:
Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
The giveaway on your knife is the gray box. We transitioned from gray boxes to the current red and black design around 2008. Your knife appears to be a legit Endura, but from an earlier era.
Stay safe,
Mike

If it is a legit old Endura, it might be cool to keep, especially with a discount.

I see nothing in your pictures to indicate it is anything other than a first run Endura4. Certainly old stock, but it appears unused.
Re: Dodgy knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
It is indeed a legitimate new “old stock” Endura 4, in the previous style Spyderco grey box. I have one like that, from the mid-2000s when the Endura 4 first came out, except mine is in foliage green color. Same font style for the engraving too.
So, nothing “dodgy” about it, in my view.

Thanks for the replies. I'll send it back since it's 20 years old and I'll get it replaced with a newer version. I'm a bit concerned about the backspring being two decades old and I'll probably will be better off with a newer one.

This seems to be an old Endura. If you want the new one, send it back. Or you could just take the discount. That's up to you. that is a good company and they will make it right and they even offered to do so. Why kick up a fuss about it?

What was the discount they were offering?SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 8:15 amThanks for the replies. Also, I have a 25+ year old Endura that still works perfect. But if you did pay for a new one I don't blame you for expecting a new one.

If we're me, I would keep that one, take the discount and thank them for that, then just order another new one... That 20 year old Spyderco and the gray box would just add to my collection... YA-me!!! lol

I've handled 50-100 year old slippies and lockbacks that still have functional backsprings.SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 8:15 amThanks for the replies. I own Spyderco lockbacks older than this Endura that work great.
I'd keep it. Those old boxes were cooler anyways.

Back spring is going to be just fine, but if it's not what you wanted I don't blame you for returning it. This is like going to buy a new 2024 Corolla and being given one from 1995.

Thank you for posting this.
My question for you all about this:
Can a customer prevent this from happening in the future by telling the retailer ahead of time to please do a very detailed confirmation on the knife to guarantee it is not new old stock or a returned or refurbished item?

Since it was the same model and steel I would have kept the older one. It was legitimate.
I thought those boxes were dark green and not grey.

Re: Dodgy knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
I hadn't realised I was kicking up a fuss. I'm simply explaining my issue and looking for advice.
My reason for posting is that I own a number of Spyderco knives and am aware of counterfeits getting into the food chain by unscrupulous customers retuning a clone or old used knife in place of the genuine new item they received.
Also this knife arrived in a dirty box with a dirty foam liner and no paperwork.
I thought it may be an older version and I was kind of ok with that but when I compared it to my Endura 4 I bought in 2017 the blade stamps were different, and I was especially concerned about the inner moulding being noticeably different at the bottom. (As per the photo above)
I did ask HH customer service to confirm it was a genuine Spyderco but they just told me to send it back or keep it with a discount.
After reading the replies I'm happy to believe its a genuine Spyderco, albeit a 20 years old model, although not what I expected when ordering.
The price I paid was around £105 and Haines offered a £35 credit against my next purchase if I kept the knife. I'm a bit rough with my knives doing bushcraft and outdoor activities and I don't fancy that back spring giving out while a new Endura will give me more faith in it. I'll send it back and look for a new one.
Thanks to all for the replies. It's helped.

Re: Dodgy knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
It did feel a bit like that lol. It was only my second order from HH and the first order was fine - I'd just taken delivery of three brand new Byrd Terns, mint condition in pristine boxes.
After that I was hooked and I felt like e kid in a sweetshop looking at the HH website - after making do for years buying knives on amazon.
Anyway I quickly placed a follow up order to get a second Endura and I have to say it sucked big time to get that tatty old box and no paperwork and so on. So yup, it was like paying for a brand new car, and getting a shabby 20 year old model on delivery. Off it goes back, I want new things if I'm paying new money. Maybe I should have asked if HH would sell me the old knife at what it cost 20 years ago haha.

do whatever makes ya happy but I don't think anyone needs to be worried about back springs giving out on a knife that has sat in a box since it was made.
