When I first heard about these I went, "Of all the other fantastic knives in their catalog, why pick those two to get the G10 treatment? And why green?"

I ain't asking questions no more. I'm just blown away! These look stunningly incredible.

This was one of my first Spydies. Thought I was buying a black frn one and was rather disappointed when I got this instead. A nano-second later I realized I hit paydirt. It's been an all time favorite since.

Sorry for the small OT. Nice Persian!

KPN (had to jailbreak it and run anysim -- still stuck on firmware 1.1.1 but it works like a charm).

I love my G10 Robin but it doesn't compare to the quality of the genuine Spydies.
QUOTE]

I would be interested to know what differences you've found in quality between the Byrd and genuine Spydies. Between the Robin and D'fly, I've found none.

Don't know if it's the build quality or I've just ...

Maybe this'll help?

That's not the etched D'fly, BTW -- just my pocket abused EDC. :D

Handling's pretty similar, but sanman951's right, there's no pinkie purchase on the D'Fly handle. Doesn't matter much as the ergos are still pretty solid.

I love ...

If you want something a few notches above the D4, consider the Caly 3 (if you're after a hefty user) or the Black FRN ZDP Calypso Jr.

But really, your final parameters pretty much described the mini Persian: elegant, not too big (about the same blade length as the D4 with an even shorter handle ...

I'm generally not a superstitious person, but still find myself following my mom's advice to "sell" or "buy" a sharp object (for a penny) rather than "giving" or "receiving" it, so that the friendship will not be severed.

Friday the 13th seems like an appropriate day for sharing those knife ...

I'd recommend a smaller blade to start with. The G10 Robin is an amazing knife for the price and you won't feel bad about it getting abused or lost. If you want to go with a full-fledged Spydie, go for either an FRN or SS Dragonfly -- great little big cutter with even more bang for the buck.

If you ...

The small Persian's got that great combination of class and style. But when I need something smaller I usually carry a blue almite navigator -- the handle material, the shade of color, and the silver clip all put together make for perfect "dressy carry".

Can't go wrong with either a Caly 3 or a Persian. If you want something different go for a PE Tasman.

I, too, would actually rather see the micarta Calypso Jr. back. With a ZDP 189 blade like the recent limited FRN run would be nice.

But, heck, I'd definitely go for a micarta Caly III. How about in dark burgundy like on those Jesters I see on the 'bay from time to time?

These days it's a PE Blue Almite Navigator with vents (because it's just so pretty) in RFP and a ZDP Caly Jr. as my mid-sized go to (coat or bag).
