Knife Superstitions
Knife Superstitions
I'm generally not a superstitious person, but still find myself following my mom's advice to "sell" or "buy" a sharp object (for a penny) rather than "giving" or "receiving" it, so that the friendship will not be severed.
Friday the 13th seems like an appropriate day for sharing those knife superstitions.

I don't know about this.

That's a reasonably popular superstition in the Philippines where I'm from. Followed it most of my life myself until I moved to Europe. Can't stand the funny looks I get when I try to explain it here.Raqudu wrote:I'm generally not a superstitious person, but still find myself following my mom's advice to "sell" or "buy" a sharp object (for a penny) rather than "giving" or "receiving" it, so that the friendship will not be severed.

I kinda only know one knife superstition and it's not really a true knife but knife like...and that refers to the Chinese Spear (Double Bladed Pointy Thingy on a 7 foot waxwood pole) Whenever you can have a knife like object attached to a seven foot pole...well that's my kinda of knife...When you get a new spear you have to make it fit your body type in terms of height. So you stand the spear next to your side butt of the waxwood on the floor extend your hand as height up as you can and perfect height is when the spear tip is not taller than the tips of your fingers. If you need to cut the waxwood down to make the spear fit your size you cut only the tappered top part of the waxwood that slips into the spear head hole to make the correction, if you cut the butt (larger end) it is symbolic of severing your root from your teachers....I know it's a superstition...but don't want to test it out...if you know what I mean.....Doc :D

I'm surprised you didn't list all the kris superstitions Doc!
Two that I remember:
1) A kris chooses its owner, when you get one, sleep with it under your pillow for a night, and if you get any bad dreams, the kris doesn't like you.
2) Something about the blade length being the distance between your nipples?
Then there's the other stuff about if you draw <insert knife type here> out of its sheath, it must taste blood before it's replaced. I've heard khuks, krises (sp?), and the daggers Sikhs wear (can't remember the name :o ).

I love superstitions, however I don't have any knife-related ones, so I'll make one up: A knife is not truly yours until it has given you a Spyder-bite. If you use it for SD before then you will not meet with success. :spyder:

Knife Like Glue
That's funny. My experience is just the opposite. If I give a nice knife to a friend, I find I can't get rid of them even if I wanted to! For me, giving a knife is like glue.Raqudu wrote:I'm generally not a superstitious person, but still find myself following my mom's advice to "sell" or "buy" a sharp object (for a penny) rather than "giving" or "receiving" it, so that the friendship will not be severed.
