Slept with one of my knives once. Having been stitched up in the emergency room, I decided to remain abstinent. ;D

O.K., bad joke. Seriously, I usually have a knife near my bed, though not really for self-defence. Just a habit.

Since the release of the Ronin, and the announcement there would be a folder version of it, I had been trying to convince myself that the Yojimbo would be my next purchase.

A few years ago, I read the novel "Hannibal" (Thomas Harris). Now, the main character uses this knife, the Harpy. The description caught my eye, and, on the spur of the moment, I decided to do an internet search.

Turned out such a knife existed, was available, looked extremely cool, and didn't ...

Harpy. VG-10 steel, ss handle. Nice, sharp, small enough to ride in just about any pocket, yet large enough a blade to do something with it.

Yes, the Harpy IS that good. :-) One heck of a knife. The new ones are with VG-10 steel, the older ones ATS-55. Mine is the latter, and it's hellishly sharp.

If it's your first expensive folder, be VERY careful. An ordinary penknife doesn't come close in terms of sharpness.

It's really easy to use, too. :-) I've touched up my Gunting, Spyderhawk, and Massad Ayoob with the 3-1 stroke technique.

I hope you made that ******* pay big time. I'm a mellow fellow myself, but if anybody used one of my knives like that, I'd fly off the handle for sure.

That said, I generally refuse to lend any of my Spydies. They're very sharp, and those people I know aren't used to such sharp knives ...

I carry the Gunting, sometimes the Spyderhawk as a backup. Never had to draw a knife (fortunately!).

The Gunting is my favourite SD knife 'cause its design allows for using it closed, thus not escalating a situation any more than necessary.

I have taken to carrying the Gunting tip-up ...

I'd take the Massad Ayoob, maybe the Gunting (have one on its way).

Well, obviously, a folder has the advantage of smaller size. :-) A fixed blade needs a sheath for proper storage; a folder does not.

As to accidentally closing a Gunting -- if what I have read is true, the lock on the Gunting is VERY strong, so closing it accidentally shouldn't ...

'ere, forget about covering postage for the knife. I can afford to stomach that. Students' job is paying enough to allow me that once in a while.
