Does anyone have an ATR yet?

#1

Post by shootist16 »

I've got one on the way. I was hoping it would get here today. It didn't

Maybe tomorrow.

I have been very excited about this knife since I handled a proto at Blade a couple of years ago.

Does anyone have one yet? Care to provide initial opinions?

Large, beautiful & expensive. It reminds me of the phrase "a thing of beauty is a joy forever!".

Got mine delivered today. first evaluation shows a large beautfull hand full of CPMS30V and Titanium. The knife looks and feels very sturdy and slick. Very good finish all over. One of the very best Spyderco knives ever. Expensive, Yes but worth every penny of it. Received the SpyderEdge version with the PlainEdge in the mail as I put down these words. I believe this one will become serious competition to the Military in no time!!! Looks like a very, very good (but large) EDC.

Clipits work!

I've had mine (PE ATR) for about a week now :-).

I love it! Overall rock-steady & sturdy design with an awesome S30V blade. I like the modified dagger design and how the nose of the blade is snubbed in shape.

It is the most expensive Spyderc I've purchased to date, but I'm really happy that I did. Thanks Sal for designing such a wonderful knife! I hope to see more knives created with the same inspirations as this one.

****, now that I've read how happy you guys are with yours, I've gotta get one, too. :-)

I have a VG-10 Harpy on my way, first. After that . . . maybe next month . . . more likely Christmas, though. ;-)

Quick review on my plain edge ATR.

Excellent finish on ti handle and blade. Nicely rounded edges. strongest spydie to date.
Out of box scary sharp.
Rock solid lock-up with no play or wobble.
Blade centered perfectly.
Extremely secure lock-down, no chance of this tip-up folder opening unintentionally.
Ambidextrius clip secures the folder securely in the pocket and the holes assist in quick withdrawal.
Cobra hood and large blade hole provide for a quick sure opening.

The ATR is definitly a "You get what you pay for" folder. Nice job Spyderco!

I can't add much to these good reviews, but mine is 1 day in my posession. I think it is Sal's best design to date. Because of its lock and size, it begs comparison with the Sebenza. When you think of its price, make this comparison in your mind.

I've had mine for a few days now. I am impressed. Spyderco's best to date. I hope this venture is mega successful, so Spyderco can justify more projects like this in the future. The ATR is worth every penny.

Thank you Spyderco.

I believe the lock is MBC rated. I will say that it inspires confidence. Mine locks up like a vault.

Thanks for the quick reply. Bladeforums being down is killing me...=/ and I go away for two weeks, so that question has been bugging me. Thanks again.

Can anyone explain the purpose behind the ATR's unique blade shape? It doesn't look like it would be a very good stabbing blade. I haven't had the chance to handle one yet.

I hate to sound ignorant, but what does it mean for a lock to be "MBC rated"?

Also, I have noticed, from photos, that the ATR, when folded, has the "extended" beak on the spine in a position that could rub a hole in your pants pocket. I am paranoid since the flipper on my Boa ruined 2 two pair of dockers. The Boa's flipper looked to be in the same postion as the extended portion of the ATR spine, when folded and clipped in your pocket. Any problems with this situation, or am I imagining things?

There really isn't a sharp edge on the rear of the ATR, so I wouldn't think you'd get excessive wear like the sharp points on athe Boa's flipper.

As for the ATR, I've owned (or own) just about every high end production knife by most of the major manufacturers (Spyderco, Benchmade, Buck, Gerber, Kershaw, Strider) and a few customs and I'm prepared to say that the ATR is the BEST production folder currenly being produced by ANYONE. I think it's that good, both in design, execution, production and performance.

I need to get a pic of the ATR in the closed position. The part you speak of doesn't stick out past the handle when the knife is closed, so it shouldn't be a problem for your pants.

MBC = martial blade craft. Spyderco knives with a MBC rating have stronger locks. I'm not sure off the top of my head what the minimum strength rating is for MBC knives, but it is alot.

sal had it posted in bfc in the last week.

200lbs/inch is the mbc rating...

ti salsa coyuld even be considered mbc rating as it breaks at 192lbs/inch... 4% variation from the mbc rating.

What other large cos are MBC rated? I new the ATR would be a winner after handling one at Blade, if it wasn't out of my price range(reach), I would have one as well. RKBA!

A Picture of the closed ATR is attached.

The compression lock on the ATR is definitly MBC rated.
This type of solid framed folder is what the compression lock was made for! When Sal first showed me the Prototype 2 years ago at the NY show I knew it would be a winner.

Opening this folder via the spyderdrop is actually awe inspiring & the cobra hood makes it very easy to open in this way.

Dano,

Just wondering, have you owned a Chris Reeve Sebenza? And what Strider did you own?

To the rest, can anybody tell me how the pivot of the ATR is constructed? When you fasten the pivot screw, does that tighten the open/close action?

Thanks,
Ted
