Re: CPM S90V. My favorite steel.

I dug out my mini-collection of Lil' Natives last weekend and noticed that I have the CruWear, 15V and S90V versions. I considered that an entirely satisfactory collection of super-steel blades. My point is that I agree with you that, even after all these years and all sorts of R&D and lots of ...

Re: REX 121 cutting glass?

I got a sprint run Police4 with the PD #1 steel I have no doubt that it's harder than my Sage5 in Rex121, that will score glass after watching that video of the Sage5 scoring the bottleneck.

What is really cool here is that Spyderco has this level of steel in edc knifes we can buy...

It is ...

Re: Pm V-11

I recall this being discussed already in the past on the forum. There is no composition disclosed, it's a proprietary steel and the only test results come from the maker and are contradictory to market consensus (eg M4 being tougher than both the A2 and O1).

CPM-M4 has similar toughness to A2 ...

Just thinking out loud:
I'm wondering what the design goals for this steel were.
My wild guess is something along the lines of stainless 3V.
That's what MagnaCut already is :).

But stainless K390, holy moly!
MagnaCut is stainless 4V class
NioMax is stainless 3V class

Re: REX 121 cutting glass?

Just to show that a simple, hard steel can do it too. 26c3 @67 HRC. Of course Shawn is a magician when it comes to steels, heat treats and geometry, but the point still stands. Hard enough steel will cut glass.

Re: REX 121 cutting glass?

Technically regular glass is around 60-61 HRC, glass is not measured in HRC, but if we converted that is what regular glass is. So any steel that is harder than that will scratch (cut) glass. Rex-121 is usually hardened to much harder than 61 HRC in knives ~70 HRC. I don't know what Spyderco hardens ...

K390 but stainless is basically the perfect knife steel.
How would the new steel be different from S90 and 110? They have fairly good stain resistant
Tougher seems to be the goal from what we’ve been told. Maybe more corrosion resistant too. Time will tell need to be patient.

Re: Magnacut Spydiechef

I’ve been wanting MagnaCut spydiechef ever since Spyderco announced they will use MagnaCut. The original size and dimensions are perfect no need for xl monstrosity.

I think for a folding chef knife an XL makes perfect sense.

If you view this as an edc knife I could see not wanting an XL, but ...

Re: Some Steel better for folders than fixed blades?

As has already been said it is more of a use difference and just the reality of small blades vs large blades. With a small blade fixed or otherwise you have very little edge to work with. Due to this it makes sense to have high wear resistant steel to prolong the edge life. Sharpening a short edge ...

Re: CPM Prototype Steel

The orange line is the approximate limit. You choose along the line how much toughness and edge retention you want. It’s been difficult historically to get stainless steels up to the orange line. Stainless steels are the blue dots.

The scales do feel different from every other titanium scales I've ever tried. I rather like the nonslip feeling, but I can understand how some would not.

The porous feeling notwithstanding, I like how it the knife feels in the hand.

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

I don't think anyone is arguing that price is driven by demand. Some people just question what drives the demand in this case, of course this is outside of the econ 101 curriculum. Subjectively this is not a $700-$800+ knife as is the price for the original on secondary market. $450 dealer ...

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

Many on the forum resent the Slysz Bowie because of the price. If I remember my ECON 101 class correctly, price is driven by demand. See what's going on here? "I can't afford one, so it's not such a great life." Or "If only it had S110V. Then, it would be . . . a knife that I still can't afford ...

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

On a side note I would also like for this to come in something else than m390. K390, MagnaCut, s90v would all be my preferences over m390, but m390 is ok too lacking other choices.

With all due respect, you and the "It's all FOMO" people are leaving something out: It's a Marcin Slysz. It has ...

Re: Knifejoy Exclusive...Slysz Bowie??!!

I had the original, tried it, nice knife, but it wasn’t popular and wasn’t selling. Sold it for $260 all in (shipping, insurance, pp fees) and it took about a day. At the time many were hanging around on secondary market and dealer sites not selling. Then spyderco stopped making it and almost ...

Re: T15 Testing and Pondering About CATRA (BESS Data Included)

The other thing to consider among all of this too is that T15 isn't exactly a "low carbide" steel itself. In the Todd Simpson article he suggests that it might not be a case of "the more carbides the better" but maybe there being an optimal ratio.

I saw this as well and even though it is ...
