It is just a name, spydiechef is no more a chef knife than any other folder. Making it larger will not make it a better chef knife. It is a very good EDC though and making it larger will make it a worse EDC. Of course both sizes can exist, but I’d rather Spyderco made more of regular spydiechefs with MagnaCut at a reasonable price than two sizes that would require different production runs and setups. If you want a chef knife just get a chef knife or any fixed blade with a longer blade instead of trying to make a folder into something unnatural.vivi wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 2:27 pmI think for a folding chef knife an XL makes perfect sense.
If you view this as an edc knife I could see not wanting an XL, but how many chef knives do you see with less than 3.5" blades?
Obviously folding versions of filet knives, chef knives, machetes etc. have to make some compromises, but typical chef knives start at 8". To me 4.5-5" would be more ideal for a folding chef knife. If you've ever used an Opinel #12 you'll see the potential.

Can’t argue with that.Barmoley wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 2:35 pmIt is just a name, spydiechef is no more a chef knife than any other folder. Making it larger will not make it a better chef knife. I feel the current Spydiechef is the perfect size folder for practical use /carrying, and it shoehorns in a lot of edge for its overall size anyway. It’s one of my favourite Spyderco blade designs thats crying out for something with a touch more edge retention.

Re: Magnacut Spydiechef
I honestly don't like many metal handles. I'm a bit tired of ti slab style RIL lock handle construction. I'm also growing tired of the constant "Magnacut the world no matter what" repeated hype requests...
But, despite all those things, I really enjoy the Spydiechef, more than many of the other ti framelock knives. And I for one actually like LC200N, glad it's as tough as it is.
But, I could see this application here actually really making sense to also offer Magnacut as the blade steel.
For tooling/cost reasons, just keep it the same design/size. A future XL would be welcomed. But I think Magnacut would make this one a hit (also with sales demand since current MC models are more utilitarian designs that many don't EDC).

Move it out of the Salt category and make it Super Blue.

Curious , is it because of the cut out to make it lefty friendly ? MG2nerdlock wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 8:28 pmI'm in the camp where i find the Chef to be just about the perfect size for EDC purposes. Why not make both? a Mag'cut OG Chef and an XL version. MY only hope is that if there's ever an XL version, they'd keep the ambidextrous clip. The Chef is one of those rare righty framelocks which is extremely lefty-friendly.

Yep going to have to agree as well. My son likes the Spydiechef and if it came in Magnacut I would basically forced to buy it for him as a gift.
Great idea.

I’m with @vivi on this one - I’ve got no interest generally in Ti framelocks, but I would get a lot of use out of a decent sized folding chef’s knife at work and when travelling.

Because it is thin (in thickness) for what it is (a ti framelock), and the chamfering is soooo good.
The handle design is so ergonomically neutral, with no palm swelling that creates discomfort in medium-to-smaller than average hands.
Because it is relatively thin, the lockbar face , when engaged, doesn't go deep into the handle as to cause unnecessary hotspots that could dig into your fingers (I don't know how to describe it properly, but I hope you get what I meant).
The cutout makes it extremely easy to flick using my left middle finger.
Not to mention the reversible pocket clip, and because it is a wire clip, I think (and I maybe in the minority) that it looks good even on the non-lockface side.
If there ever was a backlock or a compression lock Spydiechef, that would be one of the best ambidextrous EDC designs ever.

Re: Magnacut Spydiechef
I'm a big fan of the Spydiechef, it was my first Spyderco and still carry it at least as much or maybe more than my PM2 or Para3. LC200N is a great steel but I'm all for a Spydiechef 2 or Spydiechef XL with Magnacut. Both are more than sufficiently stainless, Magnacut just wins in every other department.
Actually I'm really excited about an XL version. It would be amazing if they could give the blade more belly, a little bit like a Petty knife or a very small Santoku.
That would make it even more useful in the kitchen for rock chopping herbs. I know that would make the blade a lot taller, making it less EDCable. But hey, it's called Spydiechef right, it's supposed to be a portable kitchen knife.
