Detent question

#1

Post by tkdiver1 »

I was noticing that on my g10 military that I can flick it open without even putting my thumb on the blade at all. Is that normal? It seems to me the detent should be a little stronger. Can any of you do this? Also consider that I am not trying extra hard to make this happen. I am simply flicking my wrist with a medium type flick and opens all the way up and the lock engages. Any insight would be much appreciated.

That's strange. I thought my military has too strong of a detent that makes it hard to open.

Not with mine either. Maybe you have your pivot so loose that the detent is not working as it should. I'd tighten that up.

That helped a little, but it still seems a little easy to open.

They vary some from piece to piece and from run to run. My beater S90V Millie has a strong detent, to the point where it nearly requires two hands to open. Some of my others can be flicked open fairly easily.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

You should ask someone from Spyderco about that. Seems to be an accident waiting to happen.

Ok, you've had it for two months. Next question would be how old it actually is, since knives have a long shelf life. In my experience, Militarys made in the past year or so have considerably stronger detents than older ones, perhaps in response to the changing legal climate. In contrast, those made prior to 2008 have comparatively weak detents, some so weak that they behave as yours does. Do you have the box? If so there's a two letter code on the label, to the right of the barcode. First letter represents the month, second the year, A = 1, B = 2, and so on.

HJ August 2010 then. Do you think I should send it in then Deacon or just not worry about it. I honestly dont really see it being a big problem but noticed how much easier it was to open that my other knives and began to wonder. Thoughts?

If you turn the knife over and give it a shake does it open?
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

If you don't like the way it is sound like you need to send in.

If I'm not mistaken, being able to flick it open one handed without touching the blade qualifies it as a gravity knife and very illegal in some areas. That's my understanding anyway.

Wow, I'm actually kind of amazed to hear this. It is equally as bad, if not worse, on both my Sage and my D2 Para. I just figured this was normal- even though my Ti Lum is a little better. I can open my sage just by putting very slight pressure on the blade without using the hole, and if I drop it on the carpet the blade comes flying out.

I guess I should send mine in as well, but really done want to have to do without it for that long.

Maybe be the detent ball has worn flat. It shouldn't be on a new knife but the ball on my orange military was worn almost completely flat in about 3-4 months. I guess it's possible out of thousands of them a few might not get heat treated properly, right?
