VWTattoo, the transition from epoxy to steel is seamless. I've been flushing it out all of yesterday, it's quite a bit better now, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for all the comments. Unfortunately, I managed to get lots of metal shavings into the pivot area. What's the best way to clean it out? I've tried soap and water, but that didn't get it all out. I can still hear grinding noises when it's opened/closed.
