Re: Which spyderco is in the mail?
I hate to jinx* myself, while a knife is still en route, so, I waited until it arrived: Tusk, pre-owned. I want to carry this one, not just “collect” it. Life is good.

Re: The Last Gun You Bought
Since my last post, on buying a Glock Gen5 17L, well, I liked that 17L so much, I put another on lay-away, last December, and then recently paid it off. Yes, I do sometimes like to have favored firearms in pairs. The Glock 17L, especially the Gen5, with its ample slide serrations, is an excellent ...

Re: Fixed blade EDC
The issue with knives from a self defense perspective that I see it that many knives are being designed as if they are going to be used for bushcrafting. They have way too much belly up near the tip and this will prevent 50% of the knives utility in a self defense application.
You make a valid ...

I have the CD of the Netflix movie “Highwaymen” soundtrack, in my truck’s CD player. It has been there for a while. Now and then, I swap it out for the CD of Rhiannon Giddens’ 2021 album “They’re Calling Me Home.”

1. Hand-held light comes first to mind. I like Surefire, especially the out-of-production LX2 Digital Lumamax. Two-legged predators usually prefer to select low-hanging fruit. All else being equal, a sturdy light is not an indicator of low-hanging fruit.

Yesterday, my Native opened a package, that arrived via UPS. Today, it will, presumably, open a package that is waiting at the US Post Office. Mundane stuff.

Re: Criteria for choosing a knife
1. Not being much of a collector, I put ergonomics at the top of the list. Whenever practicable, I visit a store that sells knives, to put my hands on them. In the past, I attended the Blade Show several times, where I got to handle a variety of knives at the Spyderco display. Several times ...

Re: New fixed blades you want to see?
The Temperance got so much so very right, ‘way back when, that I am glad to see there is a newer current version, which I may well acquire. The Fish Hunter is another favorite, which I was disappointed to see discontinued, before I bought what I considered to be an adequate quantity of them.

Re: The Last Gun You Bought
I have been acquiring handguns that are good for aging hands. My most recent addition, following a sell-off of three pistols, is a Glock Gen5 17L. This is the long-slide variant with a 6.02” barrel. A relatively light trigger pull, and gentle recoil, were two significant goals, for aging hands, with ...

Re: James Keating Civilian Demonstration
The Civilian is a knife that a minimally-trained individual can use effectively, for extreme-close-range personal defense, yet also has qualities that an expert, such as James A Keating, can utilize, at a much higher level. Let’s keep in mind that James Keating has created other video presentations ...

Re: My worst nightmare happened to me yesterday while kayak fishing.
I empathize with the OP. I lost my ancient Mariner, when it was not yet ancient, but still rather new, while kayaking in the Trinity River delta area, in SE Texas. This, and a few other incidents, prompted me to stop trusting pocket clips, as a means of general carry. I was giving away too many ...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought
Having retired, so that having a 24/7 “duty to respond” has given way to simply carrying a pistol comfortably, has changed the focus of what guns I want to carry. The infirmities of getting older have, very much, influenced which guns are too painful to shoot, anymore, and, which guns I still trust ...

Re: So what did y'all end up buying this year (2021)?
I bought two new Civilians, in September, to establish a reserve, in case they again become scarce. I bought my first two Civilians, in the Nineties, one of which has become misplaced. If I really like a knife, I tend to acquire spares.

Re: Which spyderco is in the mail?
I just ordered two Civilians, from authorized dealer NC Blade, through the evil-bay. Now and then, I will order spares, of a knife I particularly like, as a hedge against discontinuation. My defensive blade training moved up several notches, starting in 2003, when I attended a small amount of ...

Re: Throwback Thursday Carry
I saw this title, and thought, well, Civilian, but then decided to check, and was pleasantly surprised to see that my two Civilians, one of which I have had for a VERY long time, are the current version. So, I will carry a Bram Frank Gunting, for the rest of the day, today. It has been a while since ...

Re: Models you'd like to see return.
I accumulated what should be an adequate supply, to last my lifetime, but the Gunting, a collaboration with Bram Frank, remains my favored discontinued Spydero model. It is not just a matter of the ramp, as I would love the Gunting, even without the ramp, but the ramp is a very intuitive (for me ...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought
My most-recent firearms addition is a Glock G26, Gen3. I had sold my previous G26, a Gen4, to one of my former rookies, before I retired, as compact nines had become too much for my aging, aching right wrist. (I also traded-away my three G19 pistols, only keeping full-sized Glocks.) Well, I soon ...
