Re: Thinking about buying the Byrd Hawkbill ...
I had a Meadowlark 2 that I liked so much, as I carry 2 blades IWB, groinline, it became the blade I carried on my left hand, with my bigger folder being on the right side, since I am right-handed. I really like the serration pattern, and find it superior to any other that I have found or used, and ...

Re: General Byrd question on fit, finish & feel
Great assessment, I couldn't agree more!!
I own a G10 Dragonfly, a G10 Robin 2, a FRN wharnie Robin 2 I got for a blade swap ( see the results here https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=97477 ), and I've handled a G10 Meadowlark 2. The G10 lockback Byrds are fantastic, 90% of the value of ...

Re: Is there a BYRD in your pocket??
I thinned down the edge of the edge bevel like I had on the Resilience, and now the G10 Cara Cara 2 cuts like crazy. I put a hand-sanded satin finish on it, just with some fingernail file boards I got, that I was going to use on my guitar fret ends, but they didn't work out for that.

vivi,
I agree with having three versions of the core models. But if you take another look at it, that is basically what is already being done, just without it being very obvious, but the overall specs of some knives are pretty much the same, even though the name of the model and the design is a ...

Re: Golden Age of Supersteels Over???
I will take a knife in 420J2 if the heat treatment is optimized; most 420J2 is just quick and dirty batch HT, but I have had some removable razor blade knives where the 420J2 was 55-56HRC, and it worked just fine. Same with 420HC, AUS-6, AUS-8/AUS-8A, 8Cr13MoV, 440A, 13C26/AEB-L, 440B, 440C. I would ...

All my favorite knife haunts are gone, George & Son, Excalibur, Portland Knife Company, Andy & Bax. I think Hawthorne Cutlery and The Portland Knife House are still open.

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
Well, after keeping the factory edge and bte thickness on my Byrd Cara Cara 2 G10, I decided that I should give it an update in performance when cutting and sharpness. I just laid the corner of the edge bevel flat on my 11" IC11 Norton M Crystolon/F India Combonation Stone, Sharpening Supplies ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
Condor mountain pass camp knife.
It has a handle that melts in my hand, but came with a very thick edge....25+ dps, and not a very keen apex either.
hogged off some steel with my belt sander then cleaned it up on a coarse diamond plate. 20dps microbevel.
Gonna need some more work later on but ...

LOL!
u.w.
fun thing to play around with if you want a challenge lol. rotating circular blade. ground a new edge with the 200 grit side, refined on 400 grit, then polished on my medium ceramic bench stone.
Cutting much better now.
When sharpening rotating circular blades like a pizza ...

Re: Byrd Comet Hole
I like the comet/byrd's eye hole, and I like that it is unchamfered. It not only gives me a little more room for my thumb when the blade rotates when opening, the crisp edge provides more purchase than if it was chamfered.

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
At the recommendation of @vivi, I dropped my VG-10 Delica wharny down the lowest setting on my Edge Pro, which is around 10-11dps.
One of the widest (and ugliest?) bevels I've seen. Hopefully the performance is worth it.
I finished with a Shapton Glass 2k this time, but will try something more ...

Re: Resale value for two old spyders. 1. Seki japan. Salt1,03 #84 h1 model. 2. Rescue jr. 1998, ats-55 steel semi japan
I have an ATS-55 Merlin I bought about ten or more years ago, it had a broken tip, but I reground the tip to look like new, and I paid about $60 for it, so I think that is what they might be worth, maybe more because mine was damaged when I bought it.

Re: Pocket Clip
I have found, that on knives that have blades that are 3.5" and shorter, tip up is a more natural draw and opening for me. If the knives have blades longer than 3.5", I find that tip down is an easier way for me to draw and open the knife. Also, I rarely carry a pocket clip knife in the pocket, 999 ...

Re: Updated steel for The Bow River
I like 8Cr13MoV, it is almost perfect for a knife steel. it is just a Chinese version of AUS-8, and that used to be considered an excellent steel for a knife, and I'd have to agree.
