Hi Halfbore. Welcome to the forum. Old dry tamarack should work fine for a mule. Most any wood can be made to work as long as it's sealed appropriately, but your tamarack may not even need that. If you want to be extra safe, after you shape the scales, wax them or cover them with a coat of CA glue ...
