Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

Hey, just watched your video.

I agree that geometry is a hard pill to swallow, especially to explain a 3-fold difference. However, think about how much that margin of difference shrank when changing the geometry to a more acute angle, and following some of the sharpening advice here.

I think it ...

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

Hey folks.

I have pretty much finished my testing on the Stretch 2 Lightweight in VG10 and put all the film together on this film for my Youtube channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnWUTNzIBxE

I conclude that this particular specimen of VG10 on this Stretch 2 LW just does not perform as ...

These might be the best Delica configuration. I love mine and prefer it without the clip.

I agree! The only Delica I might trade it for is the Saint Nicks Knives exclusive in 4v with G10.

My Hap40/pakkawood ...

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

VG-10 is capable/fact to make 1000 cuts of 1/2" sisal rope while edge still slices phonebook paper w/o skid or tear.
My current EDC: laminated vg-10, ffg, 62rc +-0.5, 13dps, 0.009" BTE

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

Hey there folks!

I had a little time today to continue the test and I wanted to share the results.

I resharpened it exactly as I had before to 18° per side with the same sharpening progression using the KME with 120, 300, 600, and 1500 grit diamond stones and then finishing on my leather strops ...

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

Sounds most likely to be a sharpening mishap(s) at play here.

Could also be a blade geometry issue, with the Astute and Eagle having thinner BTE geometry, thusly enhancing the cutting performance versus perhaps a thicker BTE geometry of the Alpha and Stretch. This information is hugely ...

Added to my post above:

VG10 actually having better edge retention than 8CR also shows in Dr Larrin Thomas charts (https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/)

Re: VG10 Wear Resistance

First and foremost: I am very far from being among the steel- and sharpening experts around here!

That said: I am astonished that Spydercos VG10 is so far behind Spydercos 8CR in your test.
In my own totally unscientific experience it actually should have better edge retention than 8CR...

VG10 Wear Resistance

Hey Spyderco folks!

In my spare time lately I have been testing different knife steels edge retention using 1/2" sisal rope over a cutting board. I try and use a specific portion of the edge of a blade (usually the belly-most portion) and try to keep the cuts as consistent as possible into the rope ...
