Re: Bought a portable HRC tester. Some interesting results
Is there any way to "zero out" a tester like this? Does it come with a steel sample of a known hardness to verify any kind of accuracy? I assume there must be something like this for the high end ones. It did come with a calibration block but it's in Leeb hardness, and going by BBB's reply, the ...

Re: Bought a portable HRC tester. Some interesting results
Well you don't see anybody using them because that's not the right tool for the job. Leeb impact testing is not the same as Rockwell Scale C testing, the conversion is not going to be accurate enough for us to have the conversations we want to have about X hardness vs Y hardness on knife A vs knife ...

Bought a portable HRC tester. Some interesting results
Recently grabbed one of those electronic portable HRC testers. I don't know how accurate these things are compared to the expensive benchtop diamond tipped testers, but thought it would be fun to mess with at least. Saw this style tester on the CBRx youtube channel but haven't really seen anyone ...

Re: Giant Roadie
So review it for us, please. How does it slice with that thick blade? How is the action? Action is smooth on the open and close. I'd say it feels closer to UKPK than the Urban, the former being lighter to operate than the latter, at least on my examples. Slices fine, though I did give it my own ...

Got mine today. First Roadie for me, but I like it a lot. Very slim and lightweight. Gonna have to give it my own edge.

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Just noticed that myself. Hopefully that means some 14C28N models on the way. One of my favorite steels that Spyderco doesn't use (yet?).Steeltoez83 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 12:30 amThe grasshopper lineup getting sandvik 12c27 has me intrigued.

Re: Titanium Tenacious
Did a search and didn't see the spec listed anywhere, but can anyone that has the new Ti model and also has a set of calipers measure the handle thickness? Looks slightly slimmer than the standard G10 or LW version from the photos but hard to tell. Thanks in advance 10mm or 0.394in handle thickness ...

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Any observations of brittleness or chipping? Broke down a bunch of boxes yesterday to recycle with the REX121 Sage. Was a mixture of different sizes and types of boxes (card stock, corrugated, double thickness corrugated, etc). Other "standard" super steels like your S30V, M4, S90V, Cru-Wear, etc ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
@Guts Nice work. Seems to me like the behavior of REX 121 kind of starts venture into ceramic territory, where abrasive and sharpening method are extremely important in getting a fine apex. Quite interesting stuff. Thanks, your original post on it was very informative for me. Now that you mention ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
Why is there light reflecting off the very apex in the last two photos? Small burr? Micro-convexity? Something else? Probably because of how i captured the photos. I'm just using a cheap Carson microscope and putting my phone camera up to the eye piece lol. It's hard to hold everything lined up and ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
Finally received my REX121 Sage and got around to sharpening it last night. I'll echo wandering_about's earlier statement about the steel cutting faster than you'd expect. I was taken aback by how fast it cut in fact. From reading wandering_about's account, I felt a diamond plate might be too ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal, Part 2
Gave my first try at sharpening REX 121 today. I did not go as thin as usual, and ended up going less thin during the process due to some burr issues (that were a bit expected and self inflicted, so don't blame the steel too much for that one). Short version: This is a real challenge. I like to ...

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Dear Abby forumites, I'm so on the fence with this one! Like others, I'd rather have Rex121 in a mule but I don't want to miss out on the steel if will be our only offering :confounded I have several Para3's that are the same size w\choil and complock and just fell in love with the Delica(ruining ...

The PM2 is my favorite. The ergos, the blade shape, the size, the lock. No matter how many other designs I try, I keep coming back to it.

Re: New Urban
Just took delivery of an Urban that had the description on the site I bought it from advertising N690 steel, but the steel on the box and blade is indeed M398. Nice surprise as M398 is a pretty big upgrade from N690 in terms of wear resistance.

Got a couple emails about it. Between the recent PD#1 sprints, REC Para 3 LW, and a couple other things I picked up, I'm a little tapped out. Hope everyone else finds some good stuff during the sales.
