Delica with a Roadie XL style blade for the win.
Somewhat related, I feel the Squeak is one of Sal's most overlooked and underrated designs. The CoPilot DNA just shines. For me, the choil and spine jimping work fabulously to prevent accidental blade closure. And I can get a four finger grip on the ...

Re: MBC Slipjoint
OP here. Thanks to Mike and everyone who have shared their thoughts. I really didn't expect as much interest in this topic and greatly appreciate the new knowledge gained.

Re: MBC Slipjoint
Awesome follow-up pics to give a sense of size! Thank you for that and your personal observations regarding the knives. I'm now feeling compelled to pick up a couple of these to try out. At the very least they'll be put to good use in the yard.

Re: MBC Slipjoint
Thanks, PaperKnife! Could you share your opinions on these Vics? I always liked the 111mms over the 91mms for deployment, since there was more exposed blade you could pinch grip to open instead of using the nail nick. These hawkbills look to have the same feature.

Re: MBC Slipjoint
Evil D and Stas. Thanks very much for your perspectives. Victorinox's horticultural knives are interesting. The larger pruning knives are very different than the typical 111mm liner lock models and to the best of my knowledge, all are slipjoints. While the XS hawkbill is readily available in the US ...

MBC Slipjoint
I just listened to an interview with Mike Janich from several years ago. He mentioned when visiting parts of Europe where one-handed, locking folders aren't allowed, he carries a slipjoint, hawkbill pruning knife (he didn't say the type, but my guess would be either a floral-style Victorinox or one ...

FRN ProGrip Sprint Interest?
I picked up a well-used, G-2 FRN ProGrip at a swap meet awhile back and have been carrying it for the past month. I've had Delicas and Enduras since the beginning, but for some reason never acquired a ProGrip when it was in production. My mistake, what a great little knife. Lightweight, sturdy, and ...

Future PE Atlantic Salts?
I know plain edge sheepsfoots have never been big sellers for Spyderco, but was wondering with the discontinuation of the LC200N PE Atlantic Salts, if there are any plans to bring the model back in another steel. I have a specific need that requires a FRN knife sporting a blunt tip (not wharnie ...

Hi Fireman,
Since this thread has come back to life... In your research, you may already be aware of a French company named Wildsteer (https://www.wildsteer.com/en/). If not, check out the WING Tactic. Interesting knife they make for GIGN that incorporates a unique wire cutter. Fred Perrin would ...

Re: Can we (civilly) discuss fixed blade prices?
I'd like to see a 3 to 4” Spyderco wolf in sheep's clothing, fixed blade. Doesn't appear tactical, but could easily be pressed into effective service if a self defense need was warranted. Excellent ergonomics for a variety of grips, brown scales that aren't too abrasive against the skin for IWB ...

Re: What other cutting tools would you like to see spyderco make?
From a gardening perspective - I'd like to see Spyderco's take on a Japanese hori hori. A folding saw would be cool, but Silky really dominates that space. A pruning knife with a Spydie hole would also be slick. The Victorinox is nice, but I've always thought Spyderco could do better.

Hi Sal,
You might want to revisit elements of the World War II OSS/SOE wire cutter/escape knife design - https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/ww2-escape-knife-featured-on-popular-british-antiques-show.1425209/
Always wanted one of the modernized Al Mar versions, but they seem to be pretty scarce ...

Re: Wildland Firefighters Knife
At some point in the knife design process, you may consider contacting someone at the Missoula Technology and Development Center (MTDC). This is a USFS research facility that's tasked with developing and evaluating wildland fire equipment. Smart and experienced folks who may take a formal or ...

Re: Wildland Firefighters Knife
Fireman - Trust your gut and training when it comes to those sketchy situations. The past couple of years have been insane, and I fear it's only going to get worse. You guys are entering a whole new phase where conventional tactics and strategies are going to need to be rethought and adapted. There ...

Re: Wildland Firefighters Knife
I was on a USFS helicopter rappel crew a number of years ago, before that, an engine leader, and volunteer for a rural fire district. I believe knife selection should be task driven. Thinking back, for me, that primarily consisted of:
-Opening boxes and packaging
-Cutting strapping
-Cutting hose ...

Re: Spyderco Moran History and Chronology
While researching another history post, I realized I missed mentioning a Spyderco catalog Moran fans should be aware of. The 2013 OpFocus Product Guide contains Spydercos particularly well suited for military, law enforcement, survival, and defensive use. Page 46 has an awesome photo of FB02PBBM ...

Spyderco Moran History and Chronology
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Spyderco's first fixed blade, FB01, the Bill Moran Featherweight. In commemoration, here's a brief history and chronology of the Spyderco Moran models. Information was compiled from Spyderco and dealer catalogs, forum posts (many from Sal), Web site archives ...

Moran FB02PBBM - Sal or Michael
Hi Sal and Michael,
I'm working on a short history of the Moran models, and have a "which came first" question, if you don't mind.
Do you recall if the addition of the lanyard hole to the Moran handle was driven by consumer demand or was it part of the Air National Guard spec and then carried over ...
