Sal let me handle the prototype at the second sale. Wow. The G10 is great, just like the original, but I'd love a frn version for us everyman guys on an everyman budget. Also, bring back the trailing point.

Hi Joel! I think I picked up a lefty C15 and a Navigator 2 from you from Armslist. Welcome to the Forum!

I also got to handle the proto at the seconds sale. It was very nice and definitely true to the original in every way except for the steel, G10 color, and pocket clip. More compression locks are always better, right? :)

Sal,

I like where you're going with ergo improvements.

I am one that likes the "guard" aspect of current handle design, perhaps a 'modified' (read: less 'flared') version of that would be best of both worlds.
I would like to see blade stay near or at 3", (2.75" would be perfect) much less and it loses it's niche of doing duty as the sole knife in your pocket. More than 3" and it loses it's 'carry anywhere' appeal.
Some other color G-10 ... (Burgundy, or "darker shade of current color"... ?)
Keep the compression lock
R/L tip up wire clip - please make this a deep carry wire clip.
3mm fine by me, seems it would suit the other changes.
Dimples, no dimples - no skin off my dimples ...

Thanks!

I'm not sure how much of this you already know, but here were the specs of the proto in regards to your list:

Not sure on blade length, but it seemed like about 3 inches.
Black G10.
Had the compression lock.
The proto had a standard spoon clip.
Not sure on the last two--I can't remember if it had dimples or not.

You guys are making me jealous! I live too far away to attend the seconds sale, unfortunately. I'd really love to handle the new prototype as this is my most anticipated knife(unless there's a new ATR). :) How is the knife coming along, Sal?

I'm hoping we get a peek at this in Wooter's photos from the Amsterdam get together. The last I heard, a couple of years back, the handle shape underwent a big change to something more like a Stretch. Can anyone who has seen the proto comment on how close to the original the handle shape is? Also the plan was for a thinner blade. If this was coming from Taiwan with 4mm 3V I'd be very excited, but if it's thinner VG-10 with a different handle I'm not sure that there is anything left of the original Lil' Temp except the name. Don't get me wrong, it'll probably be a great knife, just not a Lil' Temp.

Sadly, I didn't have my original 440V Lil' Temp on me at the SFO, so I can't really comment on that. However, I do believe that the proto said "Taichung, Taiwan." Can anyone else comment on that? I wonder what steel it will end up with. Probably not VG-10 if it indeed is going to be produced in Taiwan.

Edit: My bad, I could have sworn it was Taiwan, but I must have remembered wrong. :)

Same leaf shape blade. Steel is VG-10. Handle is black G-10 with nested liners. 4 way hourglass clip.

Certainly variations are possible if demand is there. Once we're tooled up and building, it's just a matter of capacity to make variations. I'll probably want a ZDP-189 version with BRG FRN scales.

VG-10 means Japan, at least it always has.

Yes, the proto Sal was carrying at the seconds sale was VG-10 and was from Japan. I'm not sure which maker.

I haven't handled an original Lil Temp for a long time, but compared to what I remember, the proto definitely felt a bit slimmer (less "chunky") than the original handle, although part of this could have been the fact that it had a fairly standard looking hourglass clip on it instead of the beefy one on the original with the indexing holes. (That was actually one of my biggest gripes with the original because I had no intention of using the Lil Temp for martial arts, so the chunky clip didn't have much functional use for me and was always catching on stuff and scratching the heck out of things.)

The handle on the proto also had less pronounced finger choils (or whatever you call the grip contours of the handle on the original) but did keep the original guard / dagger shape overall.

Overall, I actually really, really liked the ergos on the proto and would buy one today as is, so I'm very excited to see what Sal does to make it even better before production.
