Millie rocks, but I just never need that much handle. E4 fulfills my larger knife role. Also the blade shape just does not do it for me as much as the less bellied E4. I guess choosing the E4 over the Millie is kinda like taking a beer tasting and finding out you prefer Busch Light to the higher end brews...it is just win-win in my book.

I wouldn't say the Military is a tactical knife. The guy who designed it says he designed it as a general purpose utility knife. It happens to be a superb general purpose knife and possibly the best folder for use with cold or gloved hands.

if you decide to get a military i would suggest you get this one while you still can.

http://www.nationalknives.com/servlet/t ... ife/Detail

i carried mine all day at work and i couldnt tell the difference if it was a millie or a delica in my front pocket. its a fairly large blade/handle but still feels very comfortable. and this is coming from someone with smaller hands. only complaint i have with mine is because i have smaller hands i kinda fumble around to disengage the liner lock.

I always thought the Military was too big until I bit the bullet and bought my CruWear Millie...the PM2 is nicer to carry, but the Millie carries nicely enough to still get pocket time, and if really robust cutting is in order, or if it's cold enough to require gloves, the Millie is a great choice. I don't care for liner locks especially, but my Millie feels so solid I've never really been concerned about it (And I wanted to try CruWear). It's better than you'd expect if you've never held one or carried one, though having said that, I REALLY wish I could convert it to tip-up. I have a threading kit, and I'm very strongly considering drilling holes most of the way through the liner and tapping them to convert it to tip-up.

Why do you need a Military? Because you don't have a Military. Until you own one (and actually use one) you'll never realize exactly why you need it.

Every Spyderco enthusiast needs one too... It is slim, light, capable, comfortable to carry and extremely comfortable in the hand. Once you are used to a Military, the PM2 just feels a bit small and insignificant.

All my spydies can do day-to-day EDC stuff well enough, but when I have some real cutting tasks to accomplish, I usually grab a Military.
Agree completely. Just wanted to add:

-It is my best folder to use with gloves
-The lock is very very good
-The G10 or CF is a lot lighter than the titanium versions and AFAIK the locks are just as strong (Spyderco's rating)

CF is best, but somewhat hard to get:

Agreed. I've previously bought several Millies but never warmed to them for EDC. They are my go-to, however, for use around the house.

There are Spydercos and there are Spydercos. Millie is a classic that hasn't changed nearly as much as the also-classic Endura series. Nor has it needed to. Get one before they "update" it.

I've owned a loooooad of high end knives (Hinderers, CRKs, Striders, ZT, Microtech, a pile of customs...)

I still own other knives and carry them but... whats in my pocket today? A Military! (Cf/m390)

The Military is what knocked custom knives and brands like Microtech and Chris Reevce from my pocket, and focus my collection solely on Spyderco. It's a superb large utility folder. Even though my tastes have changed to slightly shorter blades and tip-up carry, I still pack a Military occasionally. For one thing, this knife makes for a great 'folding kitchen knife', but the design is very capable of much tougher chores than that. I've used mine for over 10 years and I still recommend it. Because I prefer to carry tip-up and left-handed, personally, I would probably choose the Paramilitary 2 if I were to shop for a Military now.

My personal favorites:

The Miltary was designed back in the 90s.I think the Manix XL is better.

Until you hold one and use one u don't realize what you will be missing. I thought at first that it would be to big for my hand but after feeling one it seemed like it was made for my hand( I have small- to medium glove sized hands). I prefer my mili to my pm2 now

Because it's the only Spyderco so well-respected, a left-hand model was conceived.

It is probably the lightest of the larger spyderco folders, and it comes in several varieties. I have had many versions of it through the years and still own a few. My only gripe is the tip down carry. Otherwise it is a superb knife.

Why do you need a Military? To borrow from the world of mountaineering ... because it's there. ;)
