Fixed & Folder Spyders with the Best F & F

#43

Post by JD Spydo »

Currently the 2 Spyders I think that were made near flawless that I recently aquired are my current Streetbeat model of all my Spyderco fixed blades. And in the Spyder folder category I would have to go with my CTS-XHP Military model.

Both of those are Spyderco models I've owned in the past on several occasions but both of these recently manufactured Spyderco models that I've recently re-aquired are both near perfect from what I can tell.

For me it's hard to argue with the black Native 5. Some other knives I own have no apparent flaws but the lockbar on this one is beautifully flush with the liners. My forum Native has an incredibly toothy edge so I "give the edge" to the normal one.

Fit and Finish:
The Southard, Domino, Gayle Bradley, Chokwe, and Zulu are among my best. A lot of knives get the "fit" good (some don't and those bug me), but the finish is where the ones i mentioned are set apart. The Southard is simply amazing, the rest are close, but the Southard has a level of finishing, whether it be the chamfereing, or the stonewahsing, or the polishing that exceeds the others.

Techno is way rounder than other spydies.

And I had done you have said lol use the rods on my Cat

The Techno I believe is rounded off in many places much like the Southard. I don't own one and am going off of memory when it first came out and I handled one. I like that extra finishing personally.

My Peter Herbst Aluminum is one of the best feeling knives I own. Opens with authority and no discernible blade-play whatsoever, everything is flush with everything else. It is amazing, we need a sprint of this with some ZDP and more Ti handles!

I've never owned one of the aluminum ones, but they always "looked" too light for me. Not sure exactly what that means, but I was never really drawn to that variant for whatever reason. Maybe I should give one a try at some point.

I totally agree about the Ti scales. They have a feel and a look like no other!

I agree, the Southard is among the best finished knives I have ever handled, right in line with my Sebenza. I also have a Zulu and it is also a thing of beauty. Zulu in my opinion is one of the coolest knives Spyderco has made, and it's amazingly useful. You wouldn't think so by looking at it but it really sets a whole new standard of design. It is by far, not even close, the most ergonomic knife I have ever handled, it just locks into your hand, and the blade shape has to be used to be appreciated. I think Anso and Spyderco hit this one out of the park. Zulu derserves it's own wing in the Spyderco Hall of Fame.
