Thurin, I'd also say blade shape. My Caly Jr seems to have a slightly thinner grind (maybe it's just the crowned spine), and I really like the blade shape. There's less belly to the Caly Jr compared to the Caly 3 and I find that a bit more useful. It's shape reminds me of a shorter 3.5.

I agree with Clip and X - the Caly Jr. is very lightweight, thin stock, great ergos, and crowned spine. Ounce for ounce, it is my favorite Spydie of all time.

How would you compare the Caly Jr. to a Chaparral?

To expound on this a little more. Caly 3 and Sage 1 seem to be frequently compared. Chaparral seems to be a mini Sage. So I'm guessing it would be a similar comparison between Caly Jr and Chaparral.

thurin, the biggest functional difference to me is in weight...the caly, jr. in FRN almost disappers in your waistband or back pocket...some folks prefer heft, some like light weight. Chap is a fine knife also, but Caly, jr is my alltime fave...I own at least 2 of every incarnation of the caly, jr. The visual appeal would probably favor the chap because of the woven CF scales. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the Caly jr. is more beautiful IMHO, those fishscales are unique and functional...cheers!

As it turns out, I'm a hoarder.

Thanks guys for the info on the Caly Jr. Sounds like I need to add it to my shortlist, although they're awfully hard to find from the looks of it.

I'm discovering the same thing about myself ;) It's a disease, brother! And if this is our support group, we're in big trouble!

Did anyone notice the new pivot screws on the Calypso? GPKnives has some good pictures and the pivot is pretty different from any model I've seen.

Looks just like the pivot on my 3.5 SB. Not seeing what you're seeing. Maybe once I have it in hand.

Hey Ken,

They have some new flat pivot screws. I've seen a few of them live, and they're top class.

I would say... that it is because the clip screws are so close to it, you HAVE to have a flat pivot.

I like the positioning of the clip for tip down. Tip up is showing a lot of knife.

That looks like a very thin knife for a lined G10 blade. The original was pinned - and Sal has said several times that the Caly family started off pinned because their slim design didn't leave any room for screwed pivots. Maybe these new pivot bolts are his attempt to bring screwed pivots to these thinner knives? I'd love to see the Caly Jr. and Goddard sprints with screwed pivots!

I find it interesting that the handles are still riveted even though the pivot is screwed. That does make me rethink my idea of unscrewing the G-10 and fitting black micarta scales for something a bit more like the original. Just a bit more work, I guess.

The overall thickness looks to be similar to the Police 3, which is quite slim as well. I'll be picking one up shortly to compare, though I never should have sold my original. Overall the Police 3 and new G-10 Calypso are very comparable in many aspects and I look forward to using them side by side.
42 Spyderco fixed blades and counting...
