Wow, mongatu I really like that patina. It contrasts very nicely with the shiny bevel and the light gray G10. I think I'll do the same once mine arrives.

Be sure to let us know how the steel performs. ;)

Agree, it will match the scales after a bit of use.

Moki makes their own line of knives, perhaps that is why they stamp "Japan" In reading about them, they are also in Seki City. So I guess that even though they don't say "Seki City" they are made there.

Just got mine today and felt the need to echo the impressions that have already been posted. This knife is sweet. Very sharp out of the box and nice smooth action. The gray G10 looks nice as well and will contrast nicely with a patina. I think I'll be using some white vinegar this weekend like mongatu has done.

Can't wait to start carrying and using this thing. :D

After a few days I also rubbed the blade with some fine steel wool to lighten up the patina just a little. It was a more silvery gray when I finished. It also continues to darken and develop more "character" each time I use it on food. Very pleased that there is no sign at all of any rust spots developing.

New batch arrived today at Cutlery Shoppe. Just put mine on order.

Been carrying mine for almost a week now. Have to say, the F&F and smoothness of this Spydie is the best I've had in awhile. Seki city definitely took pride in this piece!!

Forgot to mention, Jeff has these at 35% off MSRP. Also, look under SPYDERCO SPRINT RUN as it does not appear at this time under "What's New" or the regular "Spyderco" headings.

Even with the lighting that looks sweet, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the varying degrees and patterns of patina on these blades as time goes on.

Time to start a dedicated Caly Super Blue patina thread perhaps?

Is that from grapefruit or vinegar? I like it.

I have a question. I reprofiled the blade to a thinner edge yesterday. And I used the same sharpening process I use for my CPM steels. Grit wheel to shape the bevel, and two polish steps, 6 micron compound followed by 2 micron compound. Now the blade feels over polished with very little bite. And yet it slices well.

What sort of adjustments do you guys make for carbon steel blades vs the typical CPM stainless steel blades? Did I over polish and dulled the edge?

Polishing doesn't dull edges unless you somehow rounded the edge in the process (which is pretty easy to do).

I sharpen the carbon pretty much the same as I do with other blades. It does seem to polish up to a very brilliant mirror quite quickly and easily and also seems to get very sharp very easily even at the lower grits.

I must have screwed up the angle during a pass. I touched up the edge again when I got home and now the edge is whittling hair. :o All it takes is one bad pass.

Just placed my order at CS. I was going to get the Chaparral, but once I saw that the price dropped from $146 to $134 I couldn't pass up the deal.

I have no idea why Jeff would take $10 more dollars off of an already great deal, but you won't hear me complaining.

This will be my first experience with Super Blue. I may not do the force patina, but I think I may just let it do its thing naturally. Super excited about this one.... Unfortunately I can't carry it everyday cause of the larger blade :(

Makes me wish I had waited and not gotten mine through a pre-order at KC.

I really like the steel and am tempted to pick up another from CS for backup at this great price but I've been so spoiled by the Para 2 that now it's hard for me to get enthused about the Caly platform enough to buy another one beyond the two I already have (1 VG-10 and 1 SB).

Thanks, I went with the grapefruit. If I were to do it again, I would put it in vinegar for a little while and then transfer to the grapefruit.
I have a BRKT Canadian Special I did this way and it looks awesome.
I'd post a pic but that would be sacrilegious!
