Is it just me or....
I have browsed other companies knife offerings quite a bit and haven't seen too much that matches Spyderco's bang for the buck regarding materials, design, and execution.
The price of everything is going up as energy costs rise globally. Just happy I got my blue Stretch on sale for $72 almost 2 years ago :)
Quakeman, Political opinions are not welcome here.
I heard it with my own ears , 'BO' scared you with becoming slaves of china in 10 years , in order to accept higher taxes , 'we must tax the rich people , but we all have to make sacrifices' (dont we do that all the time), he promised to reform the health insurance system (he did it in campaign, and he did it now) , but you still pay huge bills to hospitals (with fat insurances) , of course its personal , and it should be every individuals concern.
sorry for the off topic
"Sorry, off topic" is a weak excuse. I would ask that you refrain from advocating political opinions in the future. I am passionate in my own political and philisophical beliefs also, but don't air them here because it violates the forum rules and takes away from peoples enjoyment of the forum. To me the post was offensive which is why the rule exists. This place is about passion for great knives. Please keep it there.

I know this is more philosophy than anything else but don't forget necessity vs luxury.
If money wasn't a topic I'd love to have a dozen more high-end Spydies, sadly it is. Pacing yourself is good practice.
A Delica will do almost anything a small Sebenza will do and some even better. It's ok to lust after a Lion Spy and not be able to afford it. Unlike exotic sports cars a least they are attainable for most if sacrifices are worth making. Lastly being upset at the manufacturer isn't the right path, it's their prerogative to have price-point and high-end goods.

-that was no political opinion , i simply exposed some true facts , but ill erase that if a true deduction can offend some1.(i sense that you had a different sentiment when you read my post )
-you said "The price of everything is going up as energy costs rise globally" , why is that , workers at power plants /oil wells ( or you or me) asked for higher salaries-NO-, in fact its the other way , they cut the wages and the jobs, and rises prices with the help of taxes (YOU KNOW WHAT : MY SALARY WAS CUT DOWN AND TAXES WENT UP )
-what justifies the growth , ill tell you what : the need of increasing profits , since the stock exchange is not getting the $$$ anymore. (both states and companies which are the same thing)
and I apologize to spyderco for this moment
Welcome to the forums.
I highly suggest you take a look at my unofficial FAQ linked below. This is not the place to brush up on global economics but Sal explains the us dollar vs the yen and other countries. Msrp is a factor of cost to make; the higher the msrp the more it cost compared to a lower msrp item. This includes exchange labor costs, materials, shipping, and the various other fees/expenses we don't see as the consumer.
The exception being some Golden, CO knives like the Manix2 which uses a lower msrp factor per Sal. Not exactly a loss leader but a product sold affordable enough to satiate lust for other models.
Don't listen to me tho, I switched degrees from business to com. Lawlz.

Spyderco NEVER takes what the market will bear for its product! Spyderco very carefully calculates all costs involved and uses extremely reasonable margins. It is what Sal writes on the rear of the Spyderco business cards...

The Balance is a $100 small knife, but it is worth every penny I paid for it and in my mind is highly underated and most likely wouldn't have been developed by other manufacturers. The end result is a terrific, tough, small knife, but expensive for it's size.
I appreciate that :spyder: takes chances and tries new things. Some might cost more than others, but when they're in your hand and used the reasons become very clear.
Note: My apologies for overreacting in my previous post :o :o I am technically correct but should have been much more tactful and polite. No justification :o :o :o

Hi PMB Spyder,
Interesting thread. Thanx for the discussion.
I guess most of the explanations have been presented and they seem to be accurate. We also think it sucks that some of our knives are so expensive. We're constantly trying to offer a balance for our varied customer base.
Unless a company makes all of it's models (or parts) in China to take advantage of the current low Yuan, it's a challenge for all. We deal with it daily.
The lightweigt FRN is an example of a more inexpensive model made in the USA. It is a challenge for all USA made companies. Where and how to cut?
We're still pretty stubborn on carbon content, but we're open to suggestions.

Hi Sal - thanks for the response, very flattered that you would take some time to address this! Because Spyderco is the only knife brand I buy, sometimes it's disappointing to see so many new models priced so high. I realize that different years will yield different models at different price points, and I guess this year the knives (most) are on the more expensive, custom collab side (the economy and relative strength of the dollar doesn't help either). They are all beautiful designs and I would buy them all if money really did grow on trees (unfortunately this myth was dispelled many many years ago by my father)!sal wrote:Hi PMB Spyder,

All in all, keep up the great work, and as I stated before, hope you and Eric keep up with the in-house designs, they're my favorite! All the best -

I agree with everything you said. The problem is convincing your wife that there is a difference and explaining why you need so many knives. Every once in a while I'll pull a new one out of my pocket at home, just to look at and flick around, and the wife will stop and say "Is that a new knife". I always say "Nooooo, this old thing, I've had it a long time, you don't remember anything, do you."defenestrate wrote:I wince at the cost of some of my :spyder: blades but once I hold and use them, I know where that money went. I think that almost everyone here who has bought multiple spydies will agree that you get what you pay for here.

I think that everyone reading this would like to thank you for the attention that you give to the posts and explaining your thoughts. This is very rare today. I normally can't
even get a human to talk on the phone with a simple question about service or a utility bill. I have a great sense of pride when I am using a spyderco and someone asks me what kind of knife it is. I have no problems recommending spyderco to anyone anytime. You just need to clone yourself to keep up with everything that you do. Thanks, mike
Yea, sometimes after get a knew one, and the wife and I are watching TV, (The Best Defense of course) I will have it my pocket and just HAVE to look at it, so I will go the bathroom or out to the garage, or out to get something out of the truck, just so I can flick it a couple times. The worse is when I am alone in my chair playing with a new one (or even old one for that matter) and she walks in and just gives me that "What the he** is wrong with you" look.pmbspyder wrote:Hahaha BAL your post made me laugh. Same problem on this end. The first 4 or 5 were cool, she was even a fan. The next 10 or so she was noticeably less excited for me. After about 25 now all I get is a stern look, hands on the hips, and an "Are you serious?"!
