thanx.

As far as the Manix, there will be some adjustments made to the ball travel on the ramp. I don't think it's anhything you will be able to see, but the changes permit the model to take Mr. Ankerson's "overstrike test" and not defeat.

We broke many samples of the Manix to study this question. We were able to duplicate the break and we're making adjustments. We were not able to duplicate the damage done to the knife in the amount of strikes indicated. We could get the tang to deform and coin, like Mr. Ankerrsons sample, but it took far more strikes than the 5 shown.

We were able to duplicate the damage done to the tang and the liners, but not without taking the knife apart, relocating the ball and re-striking.

We have many thousands of Manix2 models all over the world performing hard use cutting daily, with no complaints.

Thanks for the update sir!

Could I inquire - Is the 'ramp' the channel cut into the backspacer which the ball travels in? Or is it referring to the portion of the blade tang that the ball contacts?

Hi Dave, both sides can be considered "ramps" as the ball travels between them. Both ramps will be adjusted.

Sal,

There were a total of 5 overstrikes and about 15 total spinewhacks just to clarify. :)

Right after the video ended it tapped it a few more times just to see, then I went inside and tightened the screws then checked it again. I was going to re-shoot the whole video if it passed explaining the issue and delete the 1st one. I thought there might have been something going on with the knife so I was going to give it a 2nd chance. ;)

Unfortunately it didn't pass though, from what you posted the overstrikes must have damaged the lock.

The Spine Whacks off camera were about the same as the ones on camera or as close as I could make them anyway, nobody is perfect as we all know.

The other damage, I don't really know as I didn't take apart the knife to look.

I can't believe this thread hasn't died yet.

That adjustment to the description of the alterations to be made is interesting to me. I speculated before that a part of the apparent performance differences we're seeing might be due to the difference in degree of ball engagement on the tang, since some stop near the edge of the ramp while mine engages quite far down and gives the impression of being seriously burly. I wonder if this is confirmation that their tests found that to be the case.

Hi SaturnNyne,

It's possible that the ball was too near the end of the tang to take the impact of the strike and transfered energy. There was too much damage to the tang to accurately assess. The ball cut a trough through the tang out to the end of the tang and then coined (deformed) the edge of the rear of the tang (continued the trough).

Our adjusgtments limit the motion of the travel of the ball in both directions. A little less self adjustment, but if someone has the need to overstrike the model, it won't defeat.

I'm curious about the degree of variability in the manufacturing process? I raise the question (which doesn't really require an answer) because all of mine (five or six) engage the ramp very deeply.

We're talking about a few thousands of an inch.

Thanks! That clarifies things for me somewhat.

I understand that there's no way to really 'change' the tang without changing the whole blade, but would it be possible to purchase spare backspacers to replace those on my current M2's? I stocked up on four of them a while ago just before Aus customs started seizing most folding knives as 'flick knives'(it's election month, so all the pollies are cracking down on 'knife crime' by seizing knifes imported by legit collectors.....)

i totally understand that self repair voids warranty - it's really a 'lesser if 2 evils' for me at this point in time, given that I would lose the knives shld I send them to the States for WR. Am absolutely willing to pay for these parts.

Any help would be great...please PM me if this isn't appropriate for the open forum?

I'm not Sal and I'm not Jim Ankerson, but it's far from clear to me that most of us really need the Gen 1.5 Manix 2. You might want to reconsider possibly making a great knife into a dangerous dud by modifying it? Sal says the change is just a couple of thousandths of an inch.

No one has directly said it but I detect lots of hints.

I think what everyone is thinking is "how can I tell when I buy a Manix 2 if its the newly improved 'Overstrike' edition"

Of course, there is nothing really wrong with the Manix 2 unless you want to overstike as Sal pointed out. Not something I would be worried about. However, I think it matters to some people so its bothering them.

Perhaps allow for someone to return a Manix 2 to have the improved lock fitted to prevent more moaning on the forum? I know it would cost but it would put threads like this to rest.

I actually heard all Manix 2, 2.0's will have an etching of Eric Glesser headbutting a rattlesnake on the blade. Well that or melting a diamond with laser eye beams.

The exact design is still in the works.

If the lock fails due to an overstrike(accident) is it damaged or is it safe to keep using? I heard once a lock is defeated it is no good-I don't believe that all the time, maybe sometimes "depending" on the intended use. This isn't just a Manix 2 question by the way.
