I just realized there was a digicam rendering.

My heart made a sound. Something like a hiccup crossed with a sob of unrequited love.

IIRC, Mr. Janich said that the handle would get tweaked to where he wouldn't be as worried about the end of the handle being specifically a striking point and giving less fan service to the people who use the Saber Grip. At the time it was great, but I guess he thinks that he compromised a bit on the handle ergos for that extra "pointy" handle bottom and for Saber Grip using idio...err, customers. ;)

Never handled one, myself, and I might be misquoting Mr. Janich on this one.

You quote me correctly, thanks.

At the time I designed the Yojimbo, there was a lot of hype about the use of knives as impact weapons. There were even some designs that focused very heavily on that aspect of their function. I therefore incorporated a number of "finer" points to the Yojimbo design to allow it to be more "thumpalicious."

The extended handle was designed partly to accomodate folks with large hands, but it also provided the extended length necessary for use as a yawara/kubotan. The straight handle back also supported this idea. The jimping on the back of the blade and the thumb purchase on the back of the handle were both designed to provide a more solid grip, but also to allow a "thumb pinch" control (grab the closed knife in your hand, flag your thumb away from the handle, stick a digit in the space between, then squeeze your thumb down to crush the digit against the handle--hurts like ****).

Although I don't dismiss the idea of striking with a closed knife and have used it with great effect, I am much less enamored with the finesse elements of its application than I used to be. As my approach to personal defense has evolved--and as I've had the opportunity to teach many more people who have limited training time available--focusing on powerful, gross-motor-skill strikes makes a lot more sense. So do ergonomics that support the REAL functions of the weapon rather than the ancillary ones.

With all that said, I sat down for a progress meeting with Eric yesterday to bring him up to speed on my projects. I've been mostly devoted to writing the Warrior book for the past few weeks, so I haven't had time to work on the Yo II design. I spent some time on that earlier this week, tuned the ergos, made a wooden model, and showed it to him for feedback. He explained that his approach to evaluating a design is initially based on the "blink" concept--grabbing the first word that comes to your mind when you see something to capture your gut emotional reaction to it. His "blink" response to the tweaked design was: "sexy."

Evolution is a good thing...

Stay safe,

Mike

I'm hoping the "Sexy" Yo II will have a "sexy" trainer to accompany it, too.

So Mike, does this mean you're bringing "sexy" back?

I just picked up a Manix 2 a few months ago and really appreciate the strength of the ball bearing lock. Adding it to the original Yojimbo design is icing on the cake. I hope everything comes together to get it done.

Or even better, tell everyone that the knife will come with FRN handles and ship them with CF or G10 instead. They could totally make money with them as well because we all know that the mad love we hold for the Yojimbo (or the Yojimbo II in this case) would mean we'd be willing to eat the difference in initial price.

Flip a whole mess of lids with that one! :D

Definitely excited and anxiously awaiting the arrival of the “sexy” Yo II !! and like many others would be equally as psyched to see it accompanied by a "twin" trainer.

+ Mad Grips on the trainer.

Making a "fighting" knife without a trainer just doesn't make much sense, after all.

PS: Any chances of a fixed (dare I say, Ronin II?) version coming out as well?
