the rock salt i have is already built for a lifetime, though... even an intense lifetime of use in alaska. don't think i'll ever need two!
This is a serious testament. I was tempted to buy another but being that I hardly even go camping I might just save for other toys. The Hossom blades are wayy too good to pass up, but sometimes you can only abuse so many huge fixed blades. :)

How's yours holding up to minor chopping duties Clovisc? Is that heat-treatment still holding strong against chips/burrs? I saw your initial review and it was very helpful.

Just got mine in and the first thing i did with it aside from shave and slice the box it came in was take it out back and "trim" a few trees around the house. It did this very well severing 1" branches clean with a good amount of force behind it. The edge held up great it was still shaving after some branch chopping abuse but i did get a small burr on it from hitting the roof i was chopping from. This easily came out when i sharpened the knife back to hair popping and it sharpens very easily for a medium sized fixed blade

I know how you feel. When I got mine a few days ago, as soon as I picked it up I had a serious urge to chop something up. I'm glad to see that you instantly put it to some hard use and that it holds up well. Hope you enjoy it as much as I think I'm going to enjoy mine!

Just received this on my order:
"we're expecting Rock Salts here Monday morning"

I too thought they were in stock for some reason.
Have been secretly scanning the house for a new box the last day or so after work. :p

Either way, as long as I get one I am happy. :D

I ordered a Forester about a week ago, and when nothing shipped, I e-mailed and got a prompt response. Jeff said he has Foresters in stock but he's totally swamped right now and will do his best to ship it out soon. The waiting is painful but I sympathize. I just hope I get it while the chopping's still good (no pun intended). :)

A little waiting is definitely worth it to get these prices, IMO.

Most of these online dealers are not 10 employee companies. Dropping MSRP by 50% and keeping up with orders must be intense.

Waiting is hard but the pay-off is well worth it.

I think more of the "problem" is that Spyderco can't get knives to CS fast enough to keep up! :D There is only one other knife vendor I've dealt with who's as just plain nice as Jeff. Worth the wait, I agree. I've got a pre-order on one of their future offerings. I'm happy to wait.

my rock salt is still serving well i did some more chopping with it today and it maintains the edge well. I think i can work harden it in a month or so i have alot of trees i can chop and some thick branches around 4-6 inches to cut up if i want. I get paid tonite at midnight and i'm thinking about getting a hossom Forester for even more hackability and ZOMBIES 9 inches is excessive for a knife but i can always say it's just a REALLY tough short machete

I agree with the previous comments. Jeff runs out of stock fast and it can take quite awhile for the next shipment to come in (i've had a manix 2 on backorder since july 17th..yeah i know). However, the prices are worth the wait and he's always quick to respond. I just wish it was clear which items are in stock. I guess it would be too much to keep up with though.

As a result of this thread, I went over to CS to see what all the hoo-ha was about. Don't really care much of a hoot about the rock salt (or ANY salt for that matter) but the super deal on the carbon fiber ZDP Caly III hit me like a ton of bricks. Yowza!! Couldn't (and still can't) believe it!! Sheesh. What a price! I ordered one so fast I almost pulled a muscle. Unreal. So the price of the rock salt is good? Ho-hum. I scored a CF Caly III. Whoooo Hooooo!!

Thanks all... !!! :)

CF Caly III is a fine knife! Really like mine, but i bit small for my tastes.
Paid more than the new price, and am still happy! :D

Now, back to the Rock Salt! :spyder:

Another reason i love the rock salt. It reminds me of a knife i wanted but the knife i wanted was S30V and they wanted 350 for it. It looks real similar but S30V will rust eventually. I'll sacrifice some edge retention for a better knife in my opinion I know the ergos are much better on this knife anyway and i also get an extra inch of actual cutting edge

sorry for the delayed response, Blerv.

i've only chopped branches -- nothing too intense -- but it works great. i've done a decent bit of batoning with my rock salt -- i've been hugely impressed by how well it works... even on thick, heavy, dense wood. (much, much better than the aqua salt... or even my old BM fecas offsider).

i'd have no reservation whatsoever relying on the rock salt for normal camp knife duties, and the handful of batoning tasks you'd likely expect to encounter. I HAVE HAD NO CHIPPING OR ROLLING OF THE EDGE!!! it would be excellent in a survival situation, as well. if i expected to do a lot of chopping, however, i'd get a good axe... or a hatchet, if i wanted to travel light. even a machete -- like a panga (lupanga in zambia) or khukri style blade. in my experience (especially in zambia), the panga style blade is where it's at... even for small trees. kinda awkward to carry, though... :D

no worries about the rock salt -- it's built to perform, and to last. it only gets better, the more you use it. used it today to clean a good-sized sea-run dolly varden. :D

Thanks for the feedback Clovisc!

I might hunt out a $20 camp axe for abusive chores as well, mostly out of empathy. It's a killer blade for the money (especially now) and it's a practice of self-control to avoid the online shopping cart again :) .

Woah... I didn't realize the MRSP dropped by almost half. I was very close to getting one of these in the past, now I think I have to. I just got myself a Pacific Salt off ebay, so unfortunately I put my Aqua Salt up on ebay the other day to help with some purchases (and because the H1 spyderhawk is going to be my dive knife). I just noticed the aqua salt MSRP is only $120 now... didn't it used to be $180? Does this mean they are going to discontinue it? Perhaps I should pull down my auction... Did Spyderco cut the prices on a lot of models?
