Les Stroud (Survivorman) says when getting a lighter for emergency use get the most garish orange color you can so you can find it easily if dropped.

I think it was just a matter of time before outdoorsman, fisherman etc. started requesting bright handled knives, and once they get used to the functionality they will be a market for it.
I stated that most people who buy the orange knives are doing so because it is different or a fad. I also stated that a small perctage of the purchasers would buy them because they perceived an advantage for their use.

Your dive watch example is interesting. From what I have seen, a metric butt-ton of people have nice dive watches that never get wet, because they look cool. Professional divers use them too. It is kind of like the really "hardcore tactical knives"--99% of the people who have and carry them are going to "tactically" open their mail with them, not use them in a SWAT or military Spec Ops environment. There is nothing wrong with this. If someone wants to buy a watch or a knife that has a real advantage in some situations, even if they don't get into those situations, that is fine. It is still more of a "this is interesting or cool" or "fad" purchase than a need driven purchase. Orange and yellow handled knives will always have a niche for the outdoors market, and rightfully so. I doubt that the color will endure as a high volume seller in knives designed for carrying in urban and office environments. I would bet that a few people have been sold on an orange dial on a watch because that cool diver had one. I know knives have been sold based on stuff like that--some companies specialize in that kind of thing, and I've even been told that a few Albo Kali Silat videos have sold a Spyderco or two

Of course, I could be wrong. I have only to look at the massive amount my portfolio has decreased in the last several months to realize that I am not very good at predicting the future :D .

for me it makes it stick out, and is unique. Im not so concerned about people knowing I have a knife. Most of the people where I live carry them anyways, so instead of "oh he is carrying a knife!" its more of a "wow thats an awesome blade where did you get it?"

I guess the uniqueness of it is what I also like about them. :D

and they just look cool

Hi MCM,

Weve done a lot of models with colors over the years. Even the original Endura and Delica introduced in 1990 had an array of colors avalable. Ladybugs as well. Then colors just kinda drifted out of demand as the tactical look became the desired "look" of the time. A lot of that has to do with custom makers, whom, as mentioned, will make custom knives for particular needs.

We began re-introducing colors in the line a number of years ago, but for different reasons.

In the case of the bright oranges and yellows, this was for easier locating, water, field, home, shop, etc. Our blue handled utility kitchen knife was blue so chefs could easily locate them in a kitchen. The red handled utility was for bars.

In the case of the UK pen knife, I was working with some knife afi's in the UK. We first developed the UK to be able to meet their new laws with a highly functional, safe folder. The reaction was: knife's ok, but black is to scary to the NPK's (non-knife-people), and perhaps it was a bit too large. So we dropped the black and added foliage green (relatively invisible so it wouldn't be noticed), and orange, highly visible, but saftey oriented.

Foliage green will actually serve as well or better than black.

We've since developed the Urban, smaller than the UK, and in FG and Orange.

In the case of "pretty" colors, customers have requested that we make them.

Orange has been popular lately and customers have requested orange knives.

We did a run of Military models per reqest from our customers. We also have a run of Orange Morans in-the-works. We made about 10 orange Morans back when they were first introduced.

I love orange in some knives. The primary reason for me buying Ladybug and UKPK was Orange color. I am not getting Orange Military or Para, for me this color is not right for them, but I would love to see Dodo and Caly3 in Orange. Apple Coral Kopa is one of my favorites.

I can understand that with the Rolex Submariner, or the James Bond Omega model, the last guy to go into salt water with those was likely Sean Connery, but that Doxa orange face is just butt ugly, yet every time I see a pro diver on television he is wearing an orange faced watch.

I also notice a lot more people interested in survival and bush craft...blame Les Stroud and Bear Grylls, I have seen on some web-sites after market changes to knives to change the handle color to orange.

Speaking of orange knives, does anyone know if the Urban Rescue will have orange G-10 handles? I sure hope so as I really like orange on "emergency" knives. The orange Millie is very cool--especially the "freak" version shown today on another thread with a black blade. I'd really like to see the Para in that combination...

The UK Rescue will come out first and it will have an orange handle.

Hey, it doesn't have to be pretty to be "in" or "cool"--have you seen a Strider fixed blade :D .

Also, I have to confess that I have a watch that is rated waterproof to 200 meters, and not only do I not dive, I really don't even swim that much (and never with this watch) :p

So you are really just a poseur :D ...just kidding.

Actually if you look at the Doxa site they have a watch rated at 5000 feet, although I think they mean metres....I don't think human beings can dive that far down, in fact I am not sure you can dive 200 metres unless in a pressure suit and they watch sure isn't going to fit over the suit. Maybe any divers on the board can tell us.

Edit: BTW I have a watch rated 100 metres....and I only swim in the pool, at the beach and once in a while I sail....so I am just as big a poseur, at least the dial isn't orange though.

I like the orange knives. It's different but I really like it. I was more hesitant about the white ones when they came out. That strikes me as a bad color for keeping clean and so forth. But, if it has a hole in the blade and a Spyder it can't be too bad.

I don't share the same enthusiasm for orange knives as many people here do. But I can see and appreciate their purpose.

I absolutely love the orange Military. Then again, I'm an avid outdoorsman. Late nights of night fishing have made me appreciate orange colored gear.

I've never had a problem with the color orange.

i like the orange color, and would like to see more colors like a navy blue, or even some more british racing green.

as far as watches go, its pressure rated for 200 meters but does that mean that people dive with them to 200 meters? No. but it does look and sound better than something rated for 100 feet which is just under 30.5 meters.

it is sorta like sports cars. top of the line new corvettes come with 500+ horespower and can do almost 200mph. do people drive them at those speeds? i'd say a good percentage of them don't. do they need the huge brakes and all sorts of high end stuff on that car? probably not but its there.

I actually like the one you linked to, but the price is way beyond me.
