I dont get Orange knifes?

#1

Post by MCM »

I associate Orange handles with inexpensive blades found in bait shops, marine hardware stores, Maybe safety orange for Hunting.

Will someone educate me as to the virtues of having a knife that screams look I have a knife?

Is it solely so you can find it if lost in the field?

Have about the same question on camouflage.......
The polar opposite of Orange in the field.

Thanks!

Pretty much. Also Sheeple don't seem to fear knives of the orange/yellow persuasion as it's related to safety and emergency gear.

In my current job, a bright handled knife would be easier to spot in the mudd and water.

Orange is my favorite color so of course I am bias but also,

for me it makes it stick out, and is unique. Im not so concerned about people knowing I have a knife. Most of the people where I live carry them anyways, so instead of "oh he is carrying a knife!" its more of a "wow thats an awesome blade where did you get it?"

I guess the uniqueness of it is what I also like about them. :D

and they just look cool

I always thought that was exactly the point of the "safety orange" knives. It is to let the people know that you want them to know that you are using a knife.

I guess it keeps things honest to the NKP and makes them feel safer that you aren't trying to conceal it. It also helps it look more like a tool then a weapon.

I have never wanted an orange knife, but this is basically what I understand about them.

As for the camo. I have no idea. Kinda makes it look tacky unless it's being used by a solidier. Even then I don't think a camo handle would disguise a reflective steel blade very well. Guess it's just different strokes for different folks.

I just really like the color orange.
I ordered an orange millie, it should pretty easy to find if it comes out of my pocket. I BMX/Mountain bike so there is a decent chance that my knife will fall out.

I'm in the boat of orange being my favorite color. But at the same time 99% of knives are black so it's just something different. Yes its easier to find if dropped, yes it looks more like a tool than a weapon and people seem to fear it less, just bonuses to me. I like orange knives because orange is the new black!

That orange just gets you pumped! Like a Vitamin C boost or something. It also makes you look like a professional. Better for the NKPs IMO. :)

I didn't really like Orange until I got one. I still don't understand why I should like it but I most certainly do. Despite being in the military I still don't get camo knives, the whole "tactical" thing leaves me cold.

I view knives as tools and emergency gear, so a bright orange handle makes it easier to find if dropped or if you are looking for it in the dark recesses of a bag full of gear.

Plus like said before, a bright yellow or orange handle knifes says "boy scout", a black handled, black blade tends to say "ninja wannabe" to the non knife carrying crowd.

Im not crazy for orange handles too, but any emergency tools are good in orange or yellow, i agree, i prefer for scales other colors like blue green and olive green. At same time i like digital camo too, obvious if you loose in one ground one orange military should be much simply look him than one digital camo...

Otherwise we was reading in forum few stories of people who they loose H1 yellow knives and they was able to find again even underwater because the bright color help a lot, so i think at last everyone have their tastes and they are free to choose what prefer but usually everything done from one big smart company as our preferite spyderco have a sense, and are not only marketing hooks.

Well, you already named one obvious reason why "someone" might want one - to make it easy to find if they rest it down while in the field (or even in the house, garage, barn, garden, etc.). Not everyone's lifestyle places them in close proximity to those likely to be "concerned" about someone carrying a knife. Human nature being what it is, I imagine there are also a few who buy orange because they crave attention and enjoy the thought that they might be making others nervous.

Could be worse, they could have slapped a black blade and hardware on it. But, on the  scale, even a black bladed orange handled knife would be a minor blip. Most days a BRIGHT yellow H-1 Hummer tricked out with more chrome than a '59 Caddy sits parked about a mile up the road from me with a For Sale sign on it.

I generally don't like bright colors on my snippers. In fact, I regret buying a yellow Atlantic Salt SE over a black one and don't like how high my Salsa rides in my pocket because say "look at me!" louder than a little, wire pocketclip. However, I've wanted an orange hawkbill ever since H1 came out and the photoshops of an orange Dodo just looked super cute.

My question is, What's wrong with orange? Why does everything have to look TACTICAL? I use all my knives as tools. A knife would be about the last thing I would use for self defense.I'm going to leave that to my 1911.
Colors are a matter of choice, that is why they build so many types of cars, trucks, homes, etc. If everything were the same don't you think the world would be kinda boring?Anyways, I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes ,but I think it's great to have choices in life, and that is why I purchased a orange handled Millie. :D

Orange

Personally, I detest them. Why are they made? Simply because, currently, they will sell. I think the color is a fad, like the burnt orange on every GM product a couple of years back (which still looks good, for some reason, on a Corvette), or that ridiculous purple that was on every other PT Cruiser a few years ago. Some people will buy the knife because they see a true advantage in their daily activities (fishing and others already posted in this thread). Most people will buy them because they are something different and "look interesting." Once a whole bunch of people have them and they are no longer as "cool," you won't see much interest in them anymore except for the small group of people who want them for the advantages they provide in their particular use. I hope this fad is over quickly.

For me, being a dark suit and tie kind of guy most days and a body armor and "tactical" rig guy some days, the bright "look at this ugly, neon sign of a knife in my pocket" look just does not cut it (pun intended) :D

I have to disagree that the color is a fad, Doxa has been making bright orange face diver watches for 40 years because the color is the one most readable in murky waters....ugly but functional, divers get it for that reason, not for a fashion statement.

http://www.doxawatches.com/sub_tgraph.htm

Les Stroud (Survivorman) says when getting a lighter for emergency use get the most garish orange color you can so you can find it easily if dropped.

I think it was just a matter of time before outdoorsman, fisherman etc. started requesting bright handled knives, and once they get used to the functionality they will be a market for it.

I don't care for the color orange but can definitely see its usefulness. I have dropped stuff canoeing and boating and these bright colors really do work for high visibility.
