Watch Fans- Whatcha into??
Hey, Steelman- thanks for ht ecomment on the Atlas/ Land Shark-He's thrilled with it, even beofre he gets it, which I hope to pick up this morning. :)
There are a bunch of guys that are into the Sinn models, AKA Sinn-ers, over at the Poor Man's WF. Great looking watches, too, with very high regards from their owners and wanna be owners as well. I need to read up on those (or maybe I don't... My $$ can't afford that knowledge!) Thanks for the link!
Which Rolex are you wearing today?? I vote for the Non Date!! :D

The Marathons are very nice watches for the money, and Countycomm is a good site for watch related and other stuff, too. The GSAR is probably one I would hunt for if I wasn't so hung up on Seikos! Nice Nighthawk, J Smith, and thanks for the great ad link!!!
Oh, I gave the Land Shark to Rotbimmer yesterday- he loves it! We'll get a pic of it up here soon!

I had never heard of Traser before!
I think I have just updated my shopping list with this one at the top:
Traser H3 Chrono BD (Big Date) PRO Blue - NATO strap
Blue tritiun, even in the second hand and date I can actualy read.
Does anyone know about the Nato watch band?

Lets see.
Very comforable.
Cool in hot weather.
Warm in cold weather
Washable.
If one pin breaks on your watch it will still be attached to the band.
Many differant colors.
I am not sure if mine are Natos or Zulus,I have seen them called both. They are the same ones Countycomm sells,2 ring model.
The color I like best on mine is the grey.

Actually, there is a difference in a NATO band and a Zulu band. Here's a link to a store with NATO bands: http://www.qualitytyme.net/pages/access ... html#10013
They fit and clasp a bit differently than the Zulu (2 buckle) that Jeff has shown in his pic. You can also get 4-buckle Zulu bands that allow you to really lock the strap down- I have two on the way right now, actually, and I have about 3 or 4 of the 2-buckle Zulus already. They are great bands, and ones I usually opt for myself. I need to take more pics of some of my other watches- the EOD watch I have on a Grey 2 buckle Zulu really looks great!
Thanks for keeping the thread going, everyone! If anyone gets inspired to buy a new watch, "You're welcome, and I'm sorry!" all in the same breath! :D
I find there's a lot in common between a well-built watch and a well-built knife- dependability, artistic flair, high tech materials, well thought out designs, and form following function. I wonder what watch Sal or Kristi wears? :)

VWTattoo, a watch thread was a good idea.
I'm not one of the watch-crazy people, and don't have some mega collection or anything, but I've been fascinated by watches since I was in first grade or so and got my first one (a hand-me down no-name analog from my brother, which is long-since lost).
I used to beg, plead and pray for digital watches from the Consumers Distributors catalog for Christmas! I would spend the two or three months leading up to the holidays just slobbering over the offerings on the watches pages of the catalogs. (That, and Service Merchandise)
In 1986, my parents got me a Heuer pilot chronograph. It's a stainless steel watch with a mechanism that winds from kinetic energy (do they call them "automatics" now?). The bezel is an E6B computer -- a slide rule for pilots to do time/speed/distance calculations. At the time, it was a serious indulgence -- about $500 from Sporty's Pilot Shop. See, my dad had recently gotten his pilot's license, and I was also going to start flying lessons soon after.
Here is a link to a discussion about the Heuer watch I have (I am not party to the discussion, but the top photo is of a watch exactly like mine.)
(I would post the pic, but it is just a bit too large for the 100kb maximum, and I have no means here to resize it. I tried to crop it but that didn't decrease the size enough.)
I sometimes wonder if the watch has increased in collector value. It was made before "Heuer" became "TAG-Heuer" so maybe it's more rare? I don't plan to ever sell it, though. It's sentimental, and I don't part with stuff like that.
Oh, by the way, I don't wear it -- it's tucked away for safe keeping.
I have worn mostly Casio G-Shock watches since about 1984. I've always been partial to the simpler-looking ones. The more little LCD blips they have, the less I like them. I also don't think they need to look so freakin' clunky on the wrist!
Strangely, though, I have switched from a $50-60 G-Shock to a $16 DB-13 DataBank model, which has 5 alarms, dual time, countdown timer, databank, stopwatch...
One indispensable accoutrement is a watchband compass I bought at a friend's outdoor outfitter shop. I have to get more of them, because they get crapped up after a few years' wear. You slip it on the non-buckle end of the band. I like being able to refer to the compass during travel.

Excellent post, PJ!!
I enjoyed reading your post peacefuljeffrey! The thought of starting this post was a good way for me to ease back into things here at the Spyderco Forums, and voice my enthusiasm for watches as well as Sypdies. I am glad that there are so many others who like-a da watches!! :D
Your Heuer model is very cool, and I am sure it is a much desired piece by those Heuer collectors and Aeronautical watch fans alike. As for the value, the best thing I could say would be to check around at some sites to get an idea of what others have to say about it. I really don't know much about them, other than that's a helluva watch! 31 jewels!!
Oh, and to answer your question about automatic vs. kinetic: an automatic uses the ocillating weight to rotate and wind the mainspring with your wrist movement. The kinetic usually does the same thing, except it uses a mini generator, usually, to create a charge that is stored in a capacitor/ battery. The turning rotor induces the power by turning the armature of the generator. This is a basic pricipal, as there are a few differences from kinetic movent to kinetic movement.

PS- it's a Black Monster Day today! Rainy and Cold... (See Page 1, post 1 for a pic!) :)

This is my Invicta Dragon Lupah Chrono-Diver. Its a very large watch and needs a big wrist to wear. Keeps great time and built like a Sherman Tank.

Here's a watch I've had for many years. It's a Rolex Zephyr Automatic, circa 1976. Original band too. Still in great shape and working well.

This is my latest and very favorite watch. I got it from my bro-in-law,VWTATTOO, for Christmas this year(yes it came early for me). Its a Seiko Atlas automatic. It came with a stainless steel band, and the band it currently resides on which is called a "Bund" band. Very comfortable for everyday wear...which I have......every day. Thanks Bro!

You could also try http://www.watchzone.com, or http://www.watchfinder.netBOK wrote:So where would one find a reputable dealer for a black monster?
chronograph.com always gets the nod it seems. Anywhere else I should be looking?
Watchfinder will show you some of the authorized dealers. You could also check out ebay, but if you want it new, a dealer will charge MSRP minus some dealer discount. Good choice, BTW!! You'll really like it as a heavy duty and very accurate watch. You can read by the lume!!
Glad you like the watch, Rotbimmer! :D :D
