Watch Fans- Whatcha into??

#1

Post by VWTattoo »

Hello- It's been a while. I've been on a self-imposed Forum hiatus for a bit, but I've had my reasons for hiding out. I apologize for my absence, and I hope to start resuming my more normal visitation and posting routine.

The reason for this post is to yak a bit about watches. I don't know about you all, but I like me a good watch. I don't have tons to blow on a super timepiece like a Rolex, or even a TAG Heuer, but I like the more affordable watches out there. I am willing to bet that there are a few others who are into horology and maybe even a bit of watch collecting as well as into the Sypdies, so I figured a good ol' thread with both in there would be a good discussion point.

Case in point- the first photo here shows my two Seiko diver watches, along with a Surefire Z2 and an Almite Worker, #042. The Seikos are: (on left) an SKZ779K1, also known as a Black Monster, and my pride and joy- a 1979 6309-7040 Suwa diver in original condition. A re-lume would be nice, and a new bezel insert is on the list of things to do, but I like the WABI- it adds character!

Image

I photographed them with the Worker since these are both "tool" watches, meant for hard work and withstanding much abuse, just like the Worker. I figured they'd go well together. What do you think? :) Also, there's a pic of the 6309 "cushion case" by itself- you gotta love the "Sunday" red flag when on Roman day names!

Image

I also have about 12 other watches of mixed variety, and choosing one for the day becomes tough, just like choosing the Spyder of the day. I would love to see some of your watch pics, along with your "matching" Spyderco knife/ knives.

Please let me know I am not alone on the Spyderco/ Watchaholics list!! :p

See you all around more, hopefully!

I have 2 Seiko's. One of them I wear all the time. I've had it for about 7 years now.

I also have a Bulova that I really like too. I will probably never buy another watch as long as I live as the 3 that I have will outlast me. :)

If I could only do the same with knives...

Man I love the chamferred hole on that Worker you got there VWTattoo!

I really like the Traser watches with tritium inserts. I have a 6502 diver that is my current favorite.

I have a few others, but they don't see much use at the moment. They are mostly titanium, with a few beaters as an exception.

Hey, David!

Which Seikos do you own, and do you have any pics? There's a few Seiko forums that get into the Seikos like we get into the Sypdies, and lots of great pics and places to get watches modified or refinished. Be careful, though- they can get the watch bug into you, too! :) Thanks for the Worker kudos- it sure is a beauty! I can't bring myself to put it to work, though- I have an SS version which sees the pocket, but the almite one is an EBC- Eye Ball Carry only. :D

Outlaw- I have the same Casio, too- it's a large one, an AMW320R-1EV, right? The only thing I wish it had is a light for the watch, but it has decent lume on the analog hands- I paid $28.00 for it due to a mislabel at Walmart! Savings= ~$45.00!

Nice Tag, Fairlane! I don't know why they get so expensive, but they sure are beauties! How's the lume on it? Nothing is as bright as a Tritium tube like in the Luminox watches, but they wear out after 7- 10 years, and must be replaced. :( That's the only thing I don't like about them. Great lookers, and tough as nails!

I'd love some pics, guys- Thanks for the responses so far! Snap a few shots with your Spyder of the day, or even your special ones for that matter. Show me why you like it so much, just don't convince me I need one!

PS- Those Skaagen watches are nice, but uber-thin. I like a bit of heft to a watch, and more "diver" based designs over a dressier watch. Still, a great timepiece! Thanks, VW! Oh, and a pic of that Omega Moonphase is needed, Mastiff!!

Casio G-Shock

I am the proud owner of a Casio MT-G (thanks again, Jur) :)
This watch has everything and more that I could expect from it: it's tough (water and shock resistant), independent (solar powered) and accurate (it receives daily a calibration signal from an atomic clock). :D Not to mention the memory function, world time and the classic stopwatch and alarm(s).

VW Tattoo, It's this watch here. Apparently they just disco'ed it. It's still probably in the shops. It's large, and has an old fashioned non lab grown crystal.

About the watch and some other stuff:

I can't take any pictures. My wife really did take the camera when she left. JL

Dear Friends,

Though I have several decent watches, this one is my personal favorite - the Invicta Monster Diver!

Nice, Mastiff- VERY cool Omega! I bet it was a pricey one!! Sorry to hear about the wife taking the camera, amongst other things, I am sure. I feel for you, I really do. My ex-wife saga happened 10 years ago, and I still have issues with that. Well, at least you still have the Omega and your Spydercos, eh? Drop me a line if you want to talk sometime- the door is open, my friend.

Hey, Hannibal! It's ALWAYS good to see you/ speak with you, as you well know! :) Yeah, it's good to get back into my "normal" interests again, slowly but steadily, I hope. Nice Invicta- It's like the Seiko Orange Monster, sort of- Miyota automatic movement, with a winding stem, right? Good lume, too, and lots of heft! I have an Invicta 2845 (I think) Black MOP w/ green bezel Abyss Pro Diver and it's VERY accurate and reliable. Here's a "Borrowed" pic:
Image

It seems we like the bass guitar AND similar watches, along with the Spydercos, eh? ;) Thanks for the watch pic, mango!

Keep 'em coming, guys! I love seeing watches almost as much as Spydies! :p

PS- Which G-Shock model have you got there, Dialex? There's a few MT models, and I'd be curious to see which one you sport!

The watch I wear about 350 days of the year is this one.

It's a Seiko SDWD47. It cost me about $300 about 7 years ago brand new.

Yep it's a AMW320R.
For me it's the best of both worlds. Classic Diver styling, but with modern electronics...

I need my alarm :o

Nice Chrono, David! I am not into the white faces on most watches, but that one looks very nice indeed! A real beauty! The red tip on the second hand and the small hands also in red really set it off nicely. It's great to have a watch that you can depend on for so long, isn't it? It's an automatic, too, right?

Outlaw- I thought that was the same watch! I like the dual analog/ digital features of it as well, which was my appeal, along with the fact that it was next to its' twin which was priced at a normal $73.00. How couldn't I snap it up?? A real bargain with full features and styling for an unreal price. That's what makes a Casio a great every day watch, you know? Thanks again for the pic!

Hey Brian, good to catch up with you as well! How old is your Seiko, and do you know the model number, by chance? The older 150m watches are, IMO, some of the best and most rugged watches and movements Seiko made, so I can understand why you are attached to it! Hre's a cool link or two for ya:
Seiko / Citizen Watch Forum
IWW- Jack the Watch Guru

Both of these places have great stuff to read and ogle- IWW will restore and customize your watch for you- check out his pics if you want to see some of his work! He's the STR of the watch world! :D

Catch you later!

Here's a link to a pic of my watch: http://www.casiosalesandservice.com/ist ... os%3D40%26

It's a G-Shock Frogman that I got last Christmas. I LOVE this watch! Solar, tough, large, neat-looking.......

I also have a Freestyle "Hammerhead" watch that I enjoy a lot.

Thanks VWTat! Actually my watch is the kind that takes batteries. I've replaced the battery about 3 times in 7 years. I do love having a nice watch that I don't have to worry about.

At the time I bought it I had not seen any white faces and thought it was really neat. I still have not seen another one like it (on an actual person). I love it.

All of the others in this thread are great too. I love the different colors you all have. ;)

Here are some of mine:

G-Shock DW-069
Luminox 3100
Eddie Bauer - some Swiss Army look-a-like
Seiko - used to be my Grandfather's, sentimental value
TAG Heuer Formula with a different TAG bracelet
Esquire rectangular watch

Nothing overly expensive, but they all see some wear. I would like to get one of the Marathon GSAR watches sometime.

Hi Scott,

I got sucked into this watch vortex about a year ago. I had to stop due to it being too expensive. I then started to collect Spyderco knives to save money and still get my buying habit fix
