Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
Testing this now on my 3.5 I find you would really have to swing the blade hard when clutching the lockbar and have your finger well below the finger choil to have the blade come down and cut you. I put my finger close to the bottom of the choil or even a little up on to the choil when releasing the lock and never had any troubles personally.

Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
Jeb,
I'm just getting used to a different way of closing it one handed. I do it like I mentioned in the Police XL thread. With my index finger in the spydie hole to control the blade, I release the lock with my thumb, guide the blade away from the locked position with the index finger still in the spydie hole, rotate the handle in my hand to get all of the fingers out of the way, and then continue closing the blade with the same index finger. This seems to be working okay, though it isn't quite smooth yet.
Edit: Here is that closing sequence in photos.

You know Tim, honestly the only thing I see in those pix is your middle fingernail lol... where did you have it, that was very obviously in the wrong place lol.
Yes, but all kidding aside, my hands are so beat up, I can't do that to close a knife, even if I had too lol.

We're all individuals and have to accommodate things in different ways. For example, I cannot close my Manix 2 one handed as the end of the handle is at the edge of my palm and pulling on the release off axis tends to push the handle off the edge of my hand; still working on a solution to that one. I can manage in other ways; it's just not easy.

Here is how I close a LT3 lefty style, as I found that mini pinch grip on the back of the knife too awkward…TimButterfield wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 9:30 amJeb wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 9:01 amYou know Tim, honestly the only thing I see in those pix is your middle fingernail lol... where did you have it, that was very obviously in the wrong place lol.

It is very intuitive and works with all Spyderco compression locks I have tried. It has opened up a lot more models to me, as I dont feel like I have to fight the right-hand bias anymore.
This is a handle forward design and if I can do it, anyone can! But yeah, the smaller that choil area gets, the more awareness you need.
It makes me want to try this technique out on the Bodacious. One of the machinists at Spyderco told me that the Bodacious bites more workers than anything else because they are so used to closing knives with generous choils.

Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
Red Leader,
i'm right-handed. So, for me, releasing the comp lock is more about the index finger pinch on the lock. My LT3 is no where near dropping closed. The blade has a strong detent to overcome to move out of the locked position. I have to flick it a bit to get it to move toward closing. I tried what you show with my LT3 and can't quite do it. My thumb doesn't move quite that way. I'll skip those photos, though. Six stitches are a souvenir of Russia.
. (not knife related)

Mine doesn't drop free either - a little shake to get things going.

This is my most used Spyderco since it joined the collection. I keep it at 10dps, it is a laserbeam. I liked it so much, I bought 2 more. Just a cutting machine. Only a Police4 K390 Wharncliffe could be better.

That looks like a nice high performance edge. Which reminds me of something from several years ago.

Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
In general, I usually carry a M1, M2, PM2 or UKPK, together with a Vic Pioneer.
My go to EDC is a PM2, typically this S90V version with AWT scales. It has those Goldilocks attributes for general use. Not too large, not too small, one hand open and close, light and comfy to hold, great cutter. And I like the colour scheme.

The new Military 2 (PM2 XL) competes hard for that top spot, and may very likely dethrone the PM2.
On days when I do not carry a Spydie, it is usually a CRK.

I remember that. I always did wonder why the Native was open to begin with.ZrowsN1s wrote: ↑Sat Mar 29, 2025 9:37 pmEnactive wrote: ↑Sat Mar 29, 2025 1:32 pmThat looks like a nice high performance edge. Which reminds me of something from several years ago.
viewtopic.php?p=1332326&hilit=Matt#p1332326I've still got that native5 with the missing tooth! Still top of the list for freak knife accident. Melting a serration off with a live wire. Thankfully this one hasn't suffered any thing like that. K390 really holds that low edge well without much edge rolling. No real chips either because I'm careful to not cut anything I'm not supposed to. Glides through those quadruple thick cardboard crates Costco likes to pack groceries in.
Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
I had made myself a snack tray I seem to remember and had the knife open resting on the side of the plate, so I could cut up cheese or fruit or something. Bumped the tray table, and onto the floor and power cord it went.vivi wrote: ↑Sun Mar 30, 2025 10:57 pmI remember that. Re: EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry
Lots of knives and I rotate a lot, not only based on use but also because it's a hobby and something I really enjoy. If I look at pocket time, use and this moment in time, it is still the Gayle Bradley 2. Love the slicey blade, good size and comfortable in the hand. Also the only knife I have a backup of. Recently the Millie and Manix 2 got more pocket time. Before that it was the Chef and the Caly 3.5. So I have to do 4 honourable mentions.

I am really nicely surprised at how many premium grade Spyders have become an EDC for many of you. However I'm slightly disappointed that no one beside myself it seems is carrying a C-60 Cruwear Ayoob in SE or PE. I've been EDCing my SE version for over 2 years now and I can't find anything I like better.
Oh I'm also carrying an older beater for rough work. I have an old ATS-55, Stainless handled Spyderco RESCUE model for jobs that are really rough and nasty to deal with. I can't believe all the rough work I've put that old ATS-55 Stainless RESCUE model through.
I use that Cruwear Ayoob on average of at least 3 times a day for various jobs I encounter. I sure get a lot of folks wanting to borrow one of mine rather than to get an EDC of their own. Some things never change do they?

Where I live (sort of around where Spyderco is) we have a 3.5" concealed blade law, which means I keep the clipped pocket knives to that size and under, which is really sad, because I would carry more and larger Spydercos, and I would for sure be carrying some big Cold Steels as well.
