EDC Appreciation Thread For Daily Carry

It goes without saying that the vast majority of us here have at least one ( maybe more) of Spyderco's premium models as our main EDC. It's been that way for me for at least 20 years plus. For us devout Spyderheads most of us even have an all time favorite that overshadows other EDC blades. Or maybe you've even a recently acquired a new favorite EDC blade that you truly appreciate for various reasons. Or other tools that you find work well with your favorite Spyder.

Please tell us which Spyderco model you ultimately appreciate the most as your main EDC. And please tell us all why that is. I truly feel naked myself if I leave the house without my Cruwear Ayoob or one of my other Spyderco EDC models I keep in rotation depending on the job at hand. Please explain why you appreciate that particular model ( or models) so much. My Cruwear Ayoob has been my ultimate favorite for some time now for many reasons. But I also have 4 others that I keep in constant rotation. Along with 2 Surefire flashlights I've grown fond of as well as some other tools I carry most days.

It's high time that our favorite EDC blades got some well deserved recognition. You can also list the other EDC tools that you most often accompany with your favorite Spyderco blade. I'm truly looking forward to the responses.

Manbug Leaf with a lanyard handles 90% of what I need. Rides in pocket so no clips sticking out of pants to ruin my look or scratch my vehicles. It is basically all I need. Outside of that the Chapparel LW would be my big knife for everything else like yard work. Lastly, I am never in the water or exercising without my H1 LBHB

The real main Edc is and has bin for about a decade my Original C95 sprintrun.
Out of all my Spydies and also all my other Manixes none gets as much time in my pocket as this one.

The design is for me pure perfection. Its size is perfect for everything i can need to cut, without feeling to “big” to take with you in the world full of sheeples. The blade slices with ease and the good old S30V gives me the wonderfull old fashioned edge retention without being time consuming to resharpen even when the edge gets a little damaged. The handle fits my hand perfectly and is comfortable in all the positions i use while working with it. Its gives me the perfect grip and then its lock. Oh boy that is a total love song to my ears.
The old Spyderco lockbacks are for me still the most impressive , safe , easy to use , durable and lefty friendly locks ever put in any folder. The moment i open my Manix and its lock clicks like the bankvault it is the hairs on my arm pop up like petrolheads get from standing near a V8.
This knife brings me joy not just when i use it but even when it just sits in my pocket. But at the same time i need to say it is a bit off a curse aswel. As its the kind of Spydie , Spyderco will never ever want to make anymore.
And sure the Manix 2 XL is an epic design on its own. But my heart just can not help it to say my good old C95 can kick its… all day everyday.

For EDC, I’ve found it hard to beat a k390 wharncliffe! The Delica is amazing in this configuration. Although the swayback is the spiciest folder I have. Something about that grind makes it a laser. I really only need one of those knives!

I can’t express enough appreciation for the Atlantic Salt. It isn’t my favorite Spydie, or the most ergonomic for my hand, but the fact that I can get a tough, rustproof folder with a sheepsfoot blade makes my work life so much better. I spent my early career wearing a sheepsfoot fixed-blade rig knife but alas, most maritime companies don’t permit fixed blade knives of any sort unless you’re the cook. The Atlantic Salt lets me get as close as I can to a proper rig knife without violating anyone’s rules. It lives in my pocket anytime I’m awake when I’m at sea and I appreciate it so very much. I am a little sad (okay a lot sad!) that the PE LC200N model was discontinued but I bought four so hopefully that lasts me a good long time. 🙂
The only knife that could displace the Atlantic Salt from my pocket at work would be a backlock Caribbean. Pretty please? 😁

My K390 Delica wharnie and S90V Manix 2 are my most-carried Spydercos, but they're not my most-carried knives.

Like Dan, mainly I rotate a lot - but if there's one daily carry it's this:

Honorable mention to the SPY27/FRN UKPK which gets a lot of carry when I want to have something smaller.

I don't know if this is what you mean by "premium." It's just an injection molded handle with a slab of PD#1 sandwiched in between. But it's the one I carry the most. It's a Sprint, if that lends any measure of "premiumosity."

The Strech 2 XL as a blade that is reasonably long and suitable for doing real work. It wasn't horribly expensive, so if it gets some "character," I don't care. Its bidirectional pattern makes it suitable as a work knife. Its lack of liners makes it super light. The color is super cool, which is why I haven't replace it with the K390 model. There's just nothing NOT to like about this knife. Every time I'm tempted to put something fancier in my pocket, I ask myself if it's better suited for any potential tasks than the S2XL. The answer is usually, "no."

Would be kinda cool if Spyderco did some limited runs of some knives in sort of a 'trading locks' series, like the Manix w/ a backlock and a Native 5 w/ a compression lock. They both sound cool and I wonder if having most or all of the tooling in place for this sort of thing makes the approach easier. How hard could it be to do a limited run - or maybe even talk to a dealer like REC or WMK and they could do an exclusive?

In general, I like the idea of keeping with the 'ambi' nature of the Manix...CBBL, back lock, maybe a future crossbar lock, and of course...a license for a Shark Lock!

I’ve been steadily carrying my 3.5 lately, my main edc pocket knife will always be a caly/calypso of some form, I just find it’s really the ultimate expression of an edc folder from spyderco and it just works for me. And I’ve been carrying my street beat on my bag, it basically functions as a back up/self defense tool.

I'm curious about the Caly...what separates it from other models? It looks very similar to the Endura/Endela/Delica, but I've noticed it gets a lot of love, very specifically, around these parts. Is it the choil, or the type of steel?

For me it comes down to the design, I would say the design family functions quite similarly particularly to the delica family you mentioned; fairly slim compact blade and handle, neutral amount of belly to the blade for plenty versatility, back lock design. The delica family by design is made for more mainstream appeal and economical, getting lots of variations and such. While the Caly family’s concept is quite similar, in being a high functional compact edc folding knife in a variety of sizes, but the design elements and differences are more chosen of sal glessers personal preferences in design, which comes quite apparent when you realize that the calys really have all the design elements spyderco is most known for implementing throughout their in-house design career; leaf blade, thumb ramp, choil, lock back, compact carry ergonomics. Another different I almost forgot is the calys are made in Moki, who does very graceful and elegant craftsmanship, which heightens the speciality of the designs as well I believe.

When I'm off work I try to mix it up but often I'll grab a UKPK or a Lil Native. Last year after reading Deadboxhero's thread asking if the delica was still relevant in 2024 viewtopic.php?t=96073 I decided to do a 30 day work challenge for myself with my TiCN combo edge. I'm not a Delica fanboy and quite honestly never really loved the model. I love the Endura, but doing LTL deliveries it's not always appropriate to be waving one around(schools, courthouses, city halls etc). After the 30 days were up the Delica hasn't left my work pants for a year now. Having a "just enough" length combo edge in a smaller less threatening size along with the slim light weight has been a tall order to replace with anything else.

I've been finding myself drawn to the Caly 3.5 lately, though I have yet to determine a specific reason for that. When I first acquired it, I had been mostly using the Chap with the textured CF layer and the Caly has the smooth CF finish instead. That slipperiness was a turn off. Now, it doesn't bother me any more. I've also had to practice another closing method as the finger choil doesn't touch the finger when closing like the Chap does. The sharp edge does instead and I need to accomodate the difference from what I'm used to. Perhaps I'm just practicing for when the Police XL comes out. :rofl I do appreciate the construction similar to the Chap with the liners and backspacer. It exudes quality.

Tim,

The index finger in the wrong place and clutching the knife to close, will leave finger cut with how I like all my blades able to swing freely... My blades are all now honed 15 dps and all of them are like a Razor.

Some of the guys here hone theirs even lower in the 10-12 dps range. I tried this but find that I am a little to hard with my knifes for that. You clutch that blade would really cut the index finger, if in the wrong place lol.

You don't have to set your knives up that way, and leave a little drag at the Axle bolt, that would have you reach for the blade to pull it closed. Basically you would be physically closing the blade.

I just don't like mine setup tight. I want my blades to swing when clutched. So my index finger placement is of importance lol.
