Maybe you can post some pictures of what you are working with, as I’m not well understanding ‘can’t nearly close it’ and what that entails. Can you describe in another way?

Hi,

Do someone know if the pivot screw of the Dragonfly is the same of the Urban?
Thanks a lot in advance

TLDR: Does anyone know whether the black posts and screws from the back half of the Para 3 LW Salt are unique to that model?

Longer version. Soooo last year I customized a Magnacut Para 3 for my niece -- she saw a PM2 I'd aftermarketed up for her dad and surprised me by saying she'd like one. You know how it is in those situations, you rise to the occasion for family.

Long story short, I bladeswapped a Para 3 LW Salt to make her that knife. She loves it, sits and looks at it and plays with it, I consider this a job well done, I think she may end up being one of us.

The point: I moved after that and decided to make a knife out of the parts I have left and the frame of that Para 3 Salt, but it's looking like some of the post and screw hardware from the original Para 3 LW Salt did not make the move with me. :( Might have rattled out of the box, who knows.

This isn't a warranty situation obviously and it's nothing I'd ever think about writing into the Spyderco helpdesk to ask them to fix for me -- I'm modding knives over here, we're past any point where they'd have a continued warranted responsibility to support the product. If you're taking apart stuff and you lose hardware that's 100% on you, the way I see it. I've customized a couple dozen Spydies at this point though, and the takeway there is that I have a LOT of spare leftover Spyderco hardware here and there amidst my knife stuff. Like, lots. But before I start digging through it with a set of calipers and a micrometer looking for hardware to cannibalize, I thought I'd pop in and ask here -- because if it's known that the Para 3 LW Salt hardware is unique to the model, I'd hate to go digging through all those screws and bolts and posts looking for Cinderella's slipper, if you follow me.

Any thoughts?

Milie sprint run from 2008.
I know it's been a few years, but is it trivial to take this apart and put it back together? Anything to watch out for?

I take apart all knives, even brand new ones like the 15V M2 I just received. Out of interest and/or tweak the pivot. The 2008 sprint run wasn't used much, I clean it up, new lube and medium locktite on the screws.

It's easy, just watch out with using alot of force when unscrewing. You don't want to strip a screw. If there is a lot of locktite in their, there are tricks using heat, never had to use that though.

Thanks @Paul Ardbeg

Is it necessary to take off the clip when disassembling the knife?

The Military 2 15V was the easiest disassembly to date. I always struggle getting the scale and liner from the lanyard tube and need to apply force. This just came off without any force! The tube is however very stuck in the reverse side, which doesn't affect doing maintenance, only when you swap scales. Not sure if this is done intentionally? Anyway, made my life easier 🤗

Taking apart knives – part 2

I’d like to thank all of you for the great information on the issue mentioned. My primary purpose for the thread was more to raise awareness that it is a problem and hope that just the greater awareness would help contribute to reducing the problem. Many people didn’t ever realize it was a problem.
I stayed out of the discussion because I really needed your input without my opinions involved. With the many posts, I have a lot to study.

FYI, we don’t plan to pin our knives or make it impossible for you to take them apart. We will continually try to make them stronger so if you do take them apart, it will be more difficult to damage them. (Eg: the case of the flippers & the washers). Trying to add something to determine “IF” they were taken apart is probably not something we can expect dealers to pay much attention to, especially dealers like Amazon. Also it becomes a “policing action” which has its own issues.

I would hope that you will discourage others from returning tampered knives and if you were doing it, you now know it is a problem.

Fruitful discussion. Thanx much. (I will be discussing the shipping of internal parts on another thread).

sal
I love the idea of a customer can take the knife apart. However, to take the lanyard tube of PM2 apart and put it back is not easy and can damage the scales.

I have a problem now. I snapped off a pivot screw in the pivot barrel of a shaman. I was installing RGT micarta scales. I noticed the liners on one side was loose in the scale. Then it I couldn't get all the play out I figured it was due to the loos fitting liner but I snapped the pivot screw trying to get all the blade play out. My dumb mistake. I need to buy a new pivoy screw and a pivot barrel. I can find pivot screws for the shaman but not the pivot barrel. Does anyone know where to get shaman pivot barrels or if PM2 or para 3 pivot barrel would work on my shaman. The end of the screw is stuck in the pivot. Any help would be greatly apprciated. Thank you!

Terry, this should solve it.

I've bunged quite a few knives up to the point they don't close. I like to strip them down, clean the parts, oil the pivot, and put thread lock on the screws. I've not had a knife that can't be brought back to 'as new' unless somethings been snapped or damaged in it. Also it makes more confidence in the knife if its got super dirty, knowing all it really needs is a good pamper afterwards.
