Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Thanks for posting! Interesting read and enjoyed the knife making process. Being Dutch I can (for now) only dream of subsistence hunting. All in all great post

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Hey Shawn,
That's a really nice design. I would like to purchase one in any steel? In fact, I'd really like one in SPY27. How thick and how long of a piece would you need?

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Sir, awesome post as always. Great looking and effective knife design. New steels are always welcome, how was the hardness? Is this a steel that leans towards edge retention?
Also wanted to say the new logo is great, simple but works well, very professional.

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Certainly interested to hear more about the steel, should be interesting coming from Dr. Thomas.
In the mean time, congrats on the bull, I didn't draw a tag this year, but hopefully next year. That knife looks like it's a really excellent design for general purpose hunting.

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Does this mean it's a new steel from Larrin? :DDeadboxhero wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:41 amI'm sure Dr Larrin will talk more about his steel when the time comes.
Can You answer any questions about it or is it hush-hush for now?
Stainless? Hardness? Suggested heat treat?
Whole post is great, it's always really cool to see the process of making and using a knife
Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Wow! I didn't think this would happen so soon. And I think we will see this come out even faster than Magnacut considering how successful it was.Deadboxhero wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:41 amI'm sure Dr Larrin will talk more about his steel when the time comes.

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
When cutting that bottle was it a push cut or slice?
Can you at least say if it's a tool steel or stainless? I'm stoked either way

It would be cool for a new Magnaxxxx steel, heard rumors of it a while ago.Synov wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 5:50 amWow! I didn't think this would happen so soon. Re: CPM Prototype Steel
If it can cut a glass bottle the steel is harder than glass. This is super. Wowee. This has been one of my great dreams to see. Sal, The Adamantium Age is upon us, brother.

This might be obvious to the smart folks, but for the rest of us, can you clarify a little?
Did they send you a chunk of material that was already heat treated to the way they want it? Is cryogenic treatment appropriate for all knife steels, or something you just do as a matter of course?
Thx.

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
Looking forward to learning more about this steel.
I'm another one who likes the design you made there Shawn. It looks like it would be comfortable in the hand and wouldn't cause hand cramping when doing a lot of heavy cutting.

Re: CPM Prototype Steel
That's certainly not something a steel company would do.RustyIron wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 1:50 pmDeadboxhero wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 8:55 amNo details are available yet, it is labeled "CPM Proto" but that is just a place holder and not the actual name.

Standard operating procedure is the steel company puts in a lot of work to give you a annealed bar of steel, not a hardened bar of steel.
Receiving a hardened bar of steel would be undesirable for many reasons.
1. I need to be able to cut and process the bar stock into a knife blank with holes in the tang to mount a handle. That would be considerably more difficult if it was already in the hardened condition.
2. I have all of my own equipment and I am quite specialized and experienced in being able to process small batch heat treatment to bring out the best properties.
3. That would just be inefficient for both parties. The Steel company has other priorities and it adds more labor and consumables for me to process as mentioned above and more cost to the steel If they even offered such but they do not.
As for the confusion, my apologies, yeah, I don't always take pictures of every single step. You may also notice there were many, many steps between when the blade was rough ground and when it was hand finished and tapered.
Of course, I wouldn't mind if the Steel company wanted to do the hand sanding work for me

I don't do anything as a matter of course, while cold treatment on knife steels is simply best practice, there is evidence that supports it is an important step to complete the quench and in a side-by-side comparison even anecdotally, we will notice a difference at the edge.
Now we can get far down the rabbit hole about situations where it's not going to help, but that would just be us being pedantic.
