Post up your Rit dye projects..
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
looks modded. You can see areas on the chamfered edges of the scales that are smoother than they come from factory.
I would have kept my M4 version if I realized this mod was possible. Looks fantastic!

I don't know why but my reply did not go through !
The guy I did this for said they were OEM from the VG-10 model. I used rit dye more graphite and left it as long as I could, since he wanted black. In reality, after a couple of minutes in it it was as black as it could get !
I did my yellow FRN Native 5 scales too. 5 to 10 seconds made them dark brown and then this weird black that is not-graphite-but-maybe-you-can-see-it-a-little-bit in it
In the collection : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Thanks! Have not regretted it one bit. Very happy with how it turned out.BEER_IS_COOL wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 6:37 pmYour PM2 looks amazing. You may have inspired me to do mine. Maybe with a gray/black fade.

Kiddos dye jobs. I told her about this thread and she wanted to share her work. Ladybug was all her, I helped her a bit with the Dragonfly fade but still mostly her work.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
When heating the dye up should you use old pot? Just wondering if it leaves behind any residue of colouring behind? Or does any pot clean up well after?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
id recommend grabbing an old pot from goodwill if you only have nicer ones, but it can clean up just fine. might have to use bar keepers friend and a bit of elbow grease but the stainless sauce pan I use is spotless after ~15 dyes.

The fades are much better in person.

so unique makeovers, personally I tend to leave stuff stock, and boring.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
New guy here. Not new to collecting Spyderco knives, but I am new to posting here. I have a Native 5 Salt MagnaCut I’d like to dye a warm orange/brown fall leaf color.
Two questions on dying FRN with Rit Dye.
1. Does it matter if you use standard Rit vs Rit Dyemore?
2. As the scales are yellow to begin with, how will that affect the Rit dye formula?
For instance, if it calls for yellow, brown, and orange dyes, can you leave out the yellow dye as the knife is yellow to begin with?
Thank you all for sharing your advice, and thanks for having me.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Answered some of my own questions by watching videos and by dying the knife.
Dyemore definitely works better than standard Rit based on videos I saw.
The burnished apricot recipe from Rit which I followed exactly turned the yellow FRN cherry red. I added 1/2 teaspoons of sandstone and chocolate brown equally until I liked the color. It came out a rich dark red/brown kind of like dark wine in bright light, mixed with chocolate. Definitely not the rusty dark orange I was going for, but a handsome autumn color nonetheless.

Looks good, nice color.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
with the manix salt coming out, i'm considering my first trial with dye. i've read that the dye doesn't take with the frcp as well, but yours looks great! did you have any issues getting it to work, and how has it held up? thanks!kennethsime wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 5:49 pmI was always bored with the grey FRCP on my Maxamet Manix 2. Last night I mixed two parts Peacock Green to one part Daffodil Yellow Rit Dyemore for Synthetics and came up with this lovely “REI Green” color.
I wanted more of an Olive green, but I can’t say that I’m unhappy with this color.
The Manix has never been my favorite knife, but it sure is a great little work knife. Now that it’s a little more mine, we’ll see if it gets some more pocket time.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
No problems as long as you use the synthetic dye. The regular stuff works fine on FRN, but not FRCP. Otherwise, easy peasy.
I think it’s held up fairly well. It doesn’t dye super deep - Scratches and scrapes will reveal the base color. That’s more noticeable on the lighter green Stretch in the picture - not sure if it’s just getting carried more, if it’s because of the lighter base coat, or because I used the regular rit dye.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
