all the aftermarket cages are for aesthetics. they don't change the function.

i think they offer a substantially better grip over the plastic cage. but i never thought the plastic cage was slippery until i tried a metal cage.

I agree. The metal cages definitely offer better traction. I replaced the springs on all of my Manix2s, and I have the cages replaced on all of them but one. It's definitely easier to unlock with a metal cage.

i strained my hand recently and it's still a little sensitive. before i typed that response last night, i went to my knives and tried it out. i have 2 with plastic and 2 with metal cages. i tried them all out just to make sure and there is a big difference that is especially noticeable for me right now. the extra effort required for the plastic cages was painful and i could feel my fingers slip. the metal cages grabbed my fingers and caused no pain, even after my hand was sore from the plastic cages.

i wrote my response as if i wasn't injured because that's not going to be a common experience. but i could definitely feel a real difference. it may not be a necessary difference, but it's a difference and i prefer it.

i do feel that the plastic cage operated a little more smoothly. it's more difficult to use the metal cage with one finger as opposed to a pinch grip because the stem of the cage binds a little on the spring. i can still do it though and still prefer the extra traction of the metal.

Interesting.

One thing I could think of that may explain our different experiences is I could imagine the plastic cage absorbs oils etc. more easily.

Other than that who knows, everyones different.

I used to consider myself a Manix guy, before I fully came around to the PM2. At one point I had commissioned a CF LW, originally a Brown XHP exclusive:



The whole process made me think that I should just do it myself next time, so I made a set of Cocobolo scales, which I all but finished because I couldn't decide if I wanted to drill them for a stock clip, or try to machine out some grooves for a wire clip. I plan to finish them for the 15v, but here's a teaser pic from 2017:



Adding a metal cage to the knife didn't really excite me the way I hoped, but it does look pretty sweet IMO:



I'm really temped by the linerless scale mod as well, but I just never really carry a Manix anymore, other than a LW in one of my hiking kits.

Where did you get the red hardware? That Manix is sweet

If you replace the spring, with a 1 step down spring, you should be able to operate it with just your finger or thumb. At least, I am able to.

I tried a step lower "medium" spring and it did not hold enough pressure to hold the blade open under pressure on the spine of the blade. This is obviously very dangerous. have you tried to make sure the cage lock holds the knife open under pressure?

i can still disengage the lock with one finger. it's just a little more difficult because it binds a little more from the lateral pressure than the plastic does. i don't want the spring to be any weaker.

Anyone else here in club "I've never handled a CBBL from factory that couldn't be unlocked with just one finger" besides me and wartstein?

i never tried unlocking my m2lw with one finger early on, but i remember that spring being more stiff than the others i've had. i can unlock all of my manixes with one finger, but not my thumb. it slips too much on the plastic and the lateral pressure makes the metal bind just enough for me to not get it with just my thumb.

when i use only one finger, i put my thumb in the spydie hole and my index finger on the cage on the opposite side. i push the cage down with my finger and close the blade with my thumb.

my thumb doesn't even bend at the knuckle, so i'm sure that's part of why i can't do it with just my thumb. and we just can't all have your enormous hands. some of us have to be well endowed in other areas... like our waistlines.

i guess i lied... i just disengaged my manix (brass cage) with just my thumb and then again with just my index finger. i guess my fingers are stronger than they used to be. i couldn't do the same with the plastic cage though.
