Hi Doc,

I carry one every day. It's my "use in public" knife.

sal

What about “use in/around home sir” ? I promisse I won’t tell anyone 🫢

Hi Marius,

I use it everywhere. Easy to open and close. I keep it sharp. I've even opened my mail with it, and I get a lot of mail.

Well sir, you can’t blame me for trying to find out which full size spydie you (mostly) use in private 😅 That being said, I shall purchase the leaf Manbug even though I am a Dfly2 guy. That leaf blade with a mild belly looks cool and I am sure it will serve me well. I carry a Dragonhawk in my fifth pocket and it’s probably my most used spydie . It opens packages like a champ but in time I discovered that it’s useful for many other chores. These micro folders cut way beyond their size. Most people don’t realize how capable they are.

I often carry one of these small knives as the only knife in my pocket. It does all I need a knife to do, nowadays. Very capable.

If I ever buy a knife again, this leaf-bladed version would be added to the short list.

It seems to me in this small size, the SE version might have some advantages over PE. Then again, on a model this small, are the serrations too small and/or close together? Any owners have any opinions on the question of PE vs SE on this model based on personal use?

I like the new leaf manbug. It is easier to open and has a blade/cutting edge shape I like. Very nice.

Here it is next to the original blade shape. You do get slightly more cutting edge on the original, mostly due to blade shape. Still I like the new leaf blade for ease in opening. See second photo

Love the shape! Looks like a cross between a Manix and a Dragonfly. Wish we could get this shape in H1/H2, especially on serrated.

Hi Nerdlock,

Talking Story;

Anything is possible. It's a matter of demand. I believe we, at Spyderco, have shown you that we're amenable to making what you want. First we have to make sure you want it, R&D research like this thread, (which is already lotsa pages. But in reality, it just usually takes longer than all of us would like.

There's a lot to bringing in a new model to the market, Starting with a concept, then a drawing, a hand made prototype sample, engineering, another prototype to prove out the engineering, putting it into the queue, getting material, etc. . Then manufacturing has a longer list.....now we have to let you know it's available, Marketing, inventory, catalogs, reveals, etc.etc.etc.

I carried a hand made prototype of the Manbug Leaf for almost 2 years before I could get a prototype sample from the maker. (And we already had the handle mold and handles!) Then another year before I had a production version in my pocket. I just heard that I'll be able to get a production serrated piece next week.

And this was my design and a personal favorite that I evolved into after carrying earlier blade variations. I believe it will be the best blade shape for this model and the functions that I have found it's used to perform. The Manbug Leaf has become one of my most carried models. Sure, we would prefer that it can be done more quickly, but given all that we are doing at any given time, that might compromise the high quality product you want and to which you are accustomed.

Lot of work and waiting for a new version. This is how should Manbug looks from the begining IMHO. I am still more of a wharncliffe fan. Mainly in smaller blades ( sub 3”) where its most usefull. Just like Sal, I use it around no knife poeple and its a great mail opener / utility blade. There it shine with its low tip and straight edge. Just my 2c

My SE is enroute and should be in my hands tomorrow. I love the blade profile and I look forward to putting it to work. I also look forward to a bright future for this one, with multiple releases in different colors and steels. I see a blue K390 with blacked out blade and hardware if I squint my eyes just right...

Does anyone have any performance comparison reports between the Manbug Leaf in PE and SE?

All I can offer is that I have found that the Manbug SE wharnie to be incredibly useful, and is my most carried pocketknife, whilst my zdp MB and Hawkbill LB now languish in a drawer. Personally I think the SE is key to maximising small blade performance for general use.

I was going to say the same. Especially on a short blade, SE should shine more brightly.

Thanks, guys. That's what I was thinking. On blades so short on single-bladed folders (as opposed to the short blades on multi-bladed traditionals), I believe that serrations have an advantage over PE. I own knives (Spyderco, Cold Steel, Buck, and Pro-Tech) with sub-2" blades. Except for the Spyderco ones, all the others I have are PE. The little PE blades often slip off of what I'm trying to cut; whereas, the SE allows the little Spyderco blades to grab and cut more easily, for MY uses. IMO, a lot of the slipping off has to do with the blades' shortness, as well as if the tiny blade has any pronounced belly to the edge.

If I do get a Manbug in the future, it'll be in SE, and most likely the leaf version.
