Spyderco Manufacturing Location question.
Would Spyderco ever consider establishing knife production in places such as Thailand, India, or other nations, if the people and the machines and materials were available to produce quality knives according to their specifications, or not at this time? Just wondering.

Re: Spyderco Manufacturing Location question.
From what I understand, Spyderco doesn’t have any of their own production facilities overseas. They work with established independent makers, who produce knives to their specs for them.

Re: Spyderco Manufacturing Location question.
SEF, I have suggested this before. I think Thailand or Vietnam would be great places to be looking for manufacturing rather than mainland China.
Honda and others including Harley Davidson I think Make motorcycles in Thailand. Vietnamese have a great Craftsman tradition. Vietnam is pushing the English language and building up the country through capitalism even though it is a communist government. It’s sort of like Singapore with a socialist government but is Run on capitalism. Wages and materials are cheap in those countries.

Precisely, Doc, that is along the same lines I was thinking. It would be interesting to see what new models and remakes of present/current models they would produce, especially with input from the local people.

Spyderco values the long term relationships they have established with the makers they currently use. They are also looking to increase US production. Would it make sense for them to invest the considerable time and money needed to bring new makers, in new countries, up to speed? I don't know.

Random question: Is Golden the only location currently capable of working with steels similar to Maxamet?

Hi Bloke,
The original Chokwe that was sent to me from Zambia by a forumite was forged out of nails on a piece rail road track.
Hey SEF,
Possible, yes, Kershaw is experimenting with Viet Nam production of some of their products. Practical, I don't think so at this time.

That doesn't surprise me in the least Mr Glesser, as I've seen some some great knives made from all sorts of junk yard steels by artisans here in Oz that perform exceptionally well. :)

Thanks!
Re: Spyderco Manufacturing Location question.
I’d prefer Spyderco to invest in expanding its US manufacturing ability.
