Cpm s30v vs. Vg10
Re: Cpm s30v vs. Vg10
I like both, but I would buy VG-10 over S30V in the same knife. I like the way it "feels".
I have found that Superblue "feels" the best of all.

Do you mean "feels" as in use, or sharpening, or both?

Both, it's hard to describe. It's like the difference between putting on a pair of denim jeans vs a pair of silk trousers. The denim may be tougher, but you can't beat the comfort of silk.

In Sharpening on the brown stone I can feel VG10 and when it is ready to go to the white stones it the blade drags agains the brown stones more S30V does not give this same degree of tactile feedback.
VG10 also gives more tactile feedback on the White Fine stones and gets very sharp for a longer time from using them.
S30V however does not benifit from the white stones it has a better bite when cutting all kinds of material if one stops at the brown stones.
In cutting all kinds of materials I find VG10 bites more and glides off of materials less takes a razor sharpness and keeps it longer.
Once VG10 approaches the working edge S30 reaches swiftly it takes almost no effort at all to bring it screaming sharp again.

Interesting. Thanks for the replies!
I like how Super Blue sharpens and cuts. I don't own a VG-10 Spyderco but I've been thinking about getting a Dragonfly lately. Still can't quite decide between VG-10 and ZDP-189.

Now you have got my interest in the super blue Steel what knife are you using in this steel? How is the corrosion can it be used in the kitchen?
I do have the ZDP189 Stretch2 after I do some pics of the factory new edge under my USB Microscope I will post them along with Pics of the Stretch 2 edge in VG10 with new factory edge (the new one I have coming in) and post both. Will also EDC the ZDP189 and let you know my thoughts compared to the same knife in VG10.

I use it in a Caly 3.5. Corrosion has been a non issue, i just put mineral oil on it once a month.Doeswhateveraspidercan wrote: ↑Sat Jan 05, 2019 10:08 amNow you have got my interest in the super blue Steel what knife are you using in this steel? How is the corrosion can it be used in the kitchen?

It is used in quite a few high end kitchen knives. It has become my favorite steel that isn't LC200N.

I have the recent Calypso Jr Super Blue Sprint. I took the edge angle down to 20° inclusive, with a 30° microbevel. I find that Super Blue is good at supporting low edge angles, is super easy to get insanely sharp, and has pretty good edge retention.
The downside is that it's very susceptible to corrosion. Mine patina'd literally instantly on cutting some acidic fruit like strawberries and kiwis. To be fair though, I haven't seen any rust at all yet.
Just make sure you clean the edge after cutting things like food, green sticks, etc and wipe it down with oil every now and then and you won't have problems.

Of all the blades I've tried in vg10 and s30v, I'll take the latter 10 out of 10 times.
There may be very specific tasks I'd choose vg10 though.

Re: Cpm s30v vs. Vg10
Completly opposite here. VG10 over S30V everyday. S30V isn’t bad I just prefer a super sharp knife with 10 stroke of the fine rods of the Sharpmaker and super sharp
Re: Cpm s30v vs. Vg10
I'm sure we use our knives in very different ways from each other, and sharpening has no influence in my preference.

I’m sure there is composition difference but using the two I really could not discern an actual difference.

To put things in my perspective, 2011 marked the birth of my twin girls and a major change in my life for the better! Also a serious pause/gap in my knife collecting and knowledge. At the time my favorite steel was M2hs. When I started looking at knives again this past summer, it was a shock to see all the new hotness following after s30v.Daveho wrote: ↑Sat Jan 05, 2019 3:30 amAt 8 years old I think you could have called it a dead thread, to put it in perspective In 2011;
-Osama bin Ladin, Kim Jong-il and Steve jobs all died.
- we had the royal wedding of Miss Middleton to prince William
- occupy Wall Street began
- the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is removed.
I like necroposts when the discussion continues. Useful and entertaining!

Re: Cpm s30v vs. Vg10
I remember looking back trying to understand how S30V became so popular and reading it was a steel purpose built for knives. Sal the owner of Spyderco was very influential in it’s coming about as was Chris Reeve and a few others if I recall.
After the Steel was in production people were really disappointed as it failed to meet the much advertised hype.
Later Chris Reeve stopped using S30V in favor of S35VN in everything he makes which he and I believe Sal were both influential with CPM developing it.
If I had to guess I would reason perhaps incorrectly there is an huge investment in equipment required to work with S30V and likely deals with CPM that are none of our buisness being fulfilled.
This to me is why we still see so much of the all around balanced steel on paper in production in new and exciting designs when clearly people would favor a different performing steel to honor the spirit of the design instead of a generalist steel that does everything ok.
S30V to me is a generalist, Many of Spydercos designs are special and deserve a specialist steel to go with them.
Spyderco is not missing this point and even does what they call sprint runs of favorite knives in different steels so when choosing now here are some good steels to consider.
CTSXHP
M390
CTS204p
VG10
LC200N
H1
Cruwear
Elmax
S35VN
M4
K390
S90V
Right now I am really enjoying VG10 like I never thought I could or would.

I like my ZDP-189 dragonfly and i like VG-10 even more. For the little user i like easy touch ups more than longer edge retention. The Meat man wrote: ↑Sat Jan 05, 2019 9:12 amInteresting. Thanks for the replies!

Vg10 while not the newest steels is just a great all rounder and zdp never really took a place in my heart
