Sharpmaker and S35VN?
I am getting a lot of conflicting data on whether the Sharpmaker can handle S35VN.I plan to reprofile knife to a lower angle on a benchstone and then finish with the Sharpmaker. Is it up to the task as some say only diamonds are good enough? What say you-yea or nay?
Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
Sharpmaker will work fine, however you may want to pickup the CBN or diamond rods for it for reprofiling.

Yep! I use the SM for S30V-S35VN all the time. Works well for me!

Is there any blade steel that Spyderco produces that the SharpMaker is not good on?

I sharpen my S110V PM2 on my sharpmaker just fine.....
Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
Sharpmaker can technically handle any steel, the question is if you have the time and patience that some steels will demand.

Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
I want to clarify I will grind the knife to a thinner edge on a coarse benchstone until I get a bur and then proceed to a final edge on the Sharpmaker.I wouldn't try to reprofile any knife on the Sharpmaker .I feel it's niche is as a final step in edging or as a light touchup.

Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
You are good to go then. I often reprofile on a bench stone and then debur and microbevel with the sharpmaker. That is where is shines. I have used it to do just that with S110V, S90V and Maxamet so S35VN will be no problem.

Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
I have knives in S30V, S110V, CPM 20CV, ZDP-189 and M4 (and soon... REX 45). It handles them all. I use a Wicked Edge for all serious sharpening and the Sharpmaker for touch ups once they lose their stupid sharpness. There are ultra fine stones for the Sharpmaker too. I have them and use them as well.
Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
Are you sure you want to do that free hand? I've only reprofiled one knife but it's hard to get a perfectly consistent bevel even with some kind of sharpening guide system.Robert Ptacek wrote: ↑Wed Aug 15, 2018 12:39 pmI want to clarify I will grind the knife to a thinner edge on a coarse benchstone until I get a bur

Re: Sharpmaker and S35VN?
I've done it that way for years.Reprofile on coarse stone and final edge on the Sharpmaker.I've heard so many stories on it can't be done without diamonds.zhyla wrote: ↑Wed Aug 15, 2018 3:53 pmAre you sure you want to do that free hand? They likely are indeed stories.Robert Ptacek wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 2:00 amI've heard so many stories on it can't be done without diamonds.
For what it’s worth I reprofile/sharpen everything S110V included with SiC and maintain with SharpMaker. :)
