Re: Spyderco Reinhold Rhino Giveaway!!!
I’m in.
My story is about my father who served in the US Navy in Vietnam as a dentist. He did 2 tours. What I found remarkable is that my father had completed undergrad and dental school and his brother was drafted by the Army. My dad volunteered so that his brother would not have to see combat as the rule from Saving Private Ryan is real- the military avoids sending two family members into forward zones when at all possible. When my dad’s first tour was over he received word that his brother was going to the tip of the spear, so he volunteered for a second tour. He had married my mother already and this wasn’t ideal, but he did not want to risk his brother dying in combat if he could sacrifice his time. I joke with him that he fought more cavities than Vietcong but the truth is our troops require lots of planning and care and all who are a part of that play a role in our military’s success. My dad will turn 75 this year and practiced dentistry in his own practice for 44 years after returning home from Vietnam. My parents are still married and are my role models for raising my own kids. A member of his hunting club told me in a private moment as a teenager, “when God was giving out daddies, somebody jumped your dumba$$ to the front of the line”. He was right.

Re: Spyderco Reinhold Rhino Giveaway!!!
Just a quick reminder: This contest will end promptly at 12:00 PM (EST) on Sunday, June 17th. A random drawing will be held the same day and the winner of the knife will be announced in this thread.
If you haven't already entered the contest but are interested in joining, there is still plenty of time! Please just post, "I'm in!" and share a brief thought about a hero in your life. This person can be someone who served or is currently serving in our Armed Forces, or maybe there is a person in your life who is a hero to you in a different way.
I really enjoyed reading each of your posts. Thank you very much for sharing your stories with us.
Good luck!
-Michael

My hero's would be both of my Grandfathers who served during WWII. My maternal Grandfather service in the Pacific and my paternal Grandfather fought in northern Africa. Both men never talked much about the war and being so young I never knew what to ask or how to ask it. I've heard stories from both sides of the family and can only imagine the pain and heartache these men went through. I'm so thankful to all who've served.

My hero for this post is my Father.
He risked a lot to escape from Hungary while it was under Russian dictatorship. I keep encouraging him to write a book about his experiences escaping, in refugee camps, and eventual settlement in Canada. He declines as he doesn't feel that anything he's done in life is all that special, which is another one of his qualities - being humble.
He was a millwright by training, which wasn't recognized in his new home. He got a job in a small sheet metal shop and put himself through school to re-train all while starting a family and new life. He's tireless in his work and family endeavors. We didn't have much but we always had enough growing up and never felt lacking.
There is the cliche about not appreciating your fathers while you're a child. Getting the strict central European upbringing I defiantly fell into the category of not appreciating his methods - at the time. Now that I have a child, "I get it".
So for this post, my hero is my father. If this post wins the knife goes to him.
The Rhino looks like it'd be a lot of fun to use for various tasks.

Mine would be my uncle. He served in the Air Force in Great Britain and was my biggest hero as a kid. I thought he was the coolest person on Earth. He got out and was not very happy with where he was in life, so at the age of 40 he decided to go back to school and become a lawyer. Instead, he rose up so quickly and showed so much promise that he is now a judge and supervises 7 other judges with many more years experience.

I'd like to honor my late Grandfather, who was a WWII vet from the greatest generation
"He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On April 7, 1942, his ship, the USS Aaron Ward was attacked by Japanese aircraft and sunk off Tagoma Point, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. John then was serving aboard the USS Haggard which was attacked and was seriously damaged by Kamikaze aircraft off Okinawa, Ryukyu Island. Prior to his service in the Navy and following his honorable discharge, John worked for General Telephone Company. He started as a lineman and retired in 1980 as a supervisor after 42 years of service."

I'm in. Thanks for the gesture. When I was growing up, the adults in my family and home town were mostly World War 2 veterans and I held them all in high esteem. They served in all the services and around the world. For me, it is that generation many others and I came to know as the Greatest Generation.
Re: Spyderco Reinhold Rhino Giveaway!!!
I'm in, if it's not too late that is.
I was always raised to call up a veteran on Veteran's Day and thank them for their service. They're all heroes to me. I've had a lot of people make a positive impact on my life. Not sure if I could pick one that stands out as a hero, but I'd probably choose my dad, simply for the life lessons and practical skills he's passed on to me (including how to sharpen a knife 20+ years ago). I'm lucky enough to spend the day with him today.

Jumping in.
A hero in my life is my wife who is a cancer survivor who only missed work on treatment days. I still don't know how she did that, but she's a fighter. She didn't let it stop her from living and is going strong years later.

I’m in. Thanks!
My father was always my hero. As a young child with silly fears of things in the night, I always felt safe when he was nearby, like he could protect me from anything bad. As I got older, I realized my father prioritized his life to put his children first. He made a lot of sacrifices for us, worked tirelessly, and was content with his life because he had provided well for his family, never thinking of himself.
Happy Father’s Day!

“I’m in!”
Thank-you for the contest! That makes YOU 1 of my heroes...
Another hero is my Dog and best-friend; Wanda...she is a certified Diabetic-Alert Service Dog, and we go everywhere together. (work; movies; Long runs; Winter-camping; etc.) She can smell when my blood-sugar is out-of-range, and let's me know. Her helping to control my levels keeps me healthier, and adds tremendously to my quality of life; over and above the ways in which having a Dog as your friend normally does.
