Re: JD's Top 10: Everything included

It has been some time since I've been on the forum. My top 9 (and a brief explanation for why):

1) Delica 4. VG-10. CE -- Jack of all trades, master of none. It may not do any job the most efficiently or effectively, but it can do almost any job. Light and versatile enough to be carried.

2) Para 2 ...

I have both the Tasman and the Spyderhawk in both PE and SE. I have found the Tasman PE to be the most versatile. I've found that the smaller size allows for better control. The Spyderhawk positions the "curve" a bit too far from my hand when I am cutting.

FWIW, I have personally rediscovered the everyday benefits of using a combo edge blade. Sure, it may not be "ideal" in cutting any particular medium, but I find it nice that I can carry one knife and have it be "good enough" or "functional" in cutting any medium. Many afi's don't mind carrying two ...

Of your choices, I would go with the Military SE in S30V. Easiest of the ones you list to clean, and the full flat grind and the serrations make it the best cutter, IMO.

Thanks Everyone for all the great suggestions. I have done some of my own tests to simulate the conditions, and here are my preliminary findings. I know that this sounds really anal, but every ounce counts since I'll be running much of the 300km race.
Basically, I tested the Military PE, Endura4 SE ...

excellent. i have not been to Yunnan, but hear it is beautiful.
my advice to you is to bring a USA made Spyderco because it is worth more in trade. bring your trekking poles- them are mountains out there boy, and they can be used for self defense.
sounds like fun, man. whatever your knife choice ...

I don't know if this kind of thread has already been done, but I have a question. I am looking at buying a Superhawk and I am interested in this type of carbon fiber in particular. I am not sure if it is peel ply or not.

I have both FRN and G10 handles on my Spydercos and want to know how the CF ...

For what it's worth, I actually prefer the PE H1 over the SE H1, just because it is so easy to sharpen the PE H1 to a razor edge. For SE, which should work even when the edges get jagged, chipped, or somewhat dull, I prefer VG-10 or S30V, which do seem less likely to soften or round out, so to speak ...

I have a few Spydies that fall into this category:

Paramilitary: Carried it for awhile and used it extensively for a few months. Found that the handle was a bit too small to get four fingers behind the choil, but using the choil was a bit awkward since the blade profile is designed for harder use ...

I agree a CE Millie might just be the perfect folder for your trek. I have found that for harder, outdoor type use, the serrations come in really, really handy for getting cuts started on thick foliage, rope, etc. There's plenty of PE to handle finer tasks like carving, whittling, etc. In fact, my ...

Combo edge revisited

I know that most on this forum seem to gravitate toward PE only or SE only blades (with some exceptions of course). I am trying out several knives for a three day trek (see my other post), and I am revisiting the combo edge knives that I have since put away (and rarely used). I have to say that even ...

where in Asia? i don't have a knife recommendation for a folder. i'm just curious. i spent a lot of time in many Asian countries while in the Marines. i carried a fixed blade (and M60E3) most of the time. a small shovel with sharpened edge will also benefit (toilet digging, snake/scorpion/spider ...

I am already on my second Superhawk. I think it is an excellent knife, especially when it comes to grip security and an ability to both slice and stab effectively. A bit thicker in the pocket, but quite light.

If youcould only carry one folder on a three day trek

...which would you recommend?

I am going to be competing in a three day trek in Asia in fairly temperate, but moist, conditions (10 to 20 degrees celsius) and want to have a versatile folder for the trip. Speed is important, so I would prefer something lighter that carries easily; I do not want to ...

Same with me actually :)

I only change my Delica(3 or4)SE for my Milie when I'm rebellious in the head and don't care for NKP(which isn't that often I'm afraid :o )

Yes, the NKP factor definitely influences my EDC choice as well. I usually carry a D4/PE instead of the D4/SE for this exact reason ...

I'm pretty well the same. My standard carry is typically a Delica of some sort. The last little while it's a G-10/PE one. One of my "beaters" for reno work is a D4/CE. I tend to carry multiples depending on what I'm planning to do as well. My regular carry is my Delica/UKPK/Dragonfly and a small ...

Back to the basics: Delica 4 FRN

So forty or fifty Spyderco knives later...and I find myself gravitating back to a remake of the classic Delica (the Delica 3 was my first Spyderco). I think it boils down to this: if I don't know why I'll be needing a knife when I decide to carry one on my body, I find myself choosing the D4 FRN ...

Quick question: is the handle large enough to fit all four fingers without using the choil?
