If youcould only carry one folder on a three day trek

#1

Post by bk400 »

...which would you recommend?

I am going to be competing in a three day trek in Asia in fairly temperate, but moist, conditions (10 to 20 degrees celsius) and want to have a versatile folder for the trip. Speed is important, so I would prefer something lighter that carries easily; I do not want to bother with a sheath. Folder will most likely be used only for emergency survival situations.

I have thought of the following choices, each with different pros and cons, but would love input from others:

Military PE
Police 3 PE
Delica 4 PE
Delica 4 SE
Superhawk
Tasman Salt

Thanks!

I'd choose the Salt1. PE or SE...whatever suits your needs. Choose yellow.

They are light, rust proof and inexpensive. See the current H1 thread...lots of folks swear by them.

where in Asia? i don't have a knife recommendation for a folder. i'm just curious. i spent a lot of time in many Asian countries while in the Marines. i carried a fixed blade (and M60E3) most of the time. a small shovel with sharpened edge will also benefit (toilet digging, snake/scorpion/spider handling, fire pit, self defense, etc.)

anyway, before and after details would be cool.

From your list I would select the Military.

If I could have any Spyderco folder in current production, I would have a Military.

If I could have any Spyderco in current production, I would have a Rock Salt.

Let us know what you end up taking and how the event turned out. Pics are encouraged, but sounds like they will not be an option. You will just have to paint detailed pictures with words. :)

Best wishes.

why not an assist or rescue? I cant speak to the rescue but my assist II would be a very useful knife in a scenario like that. its a large knife, but personally I like that.

for emergency survival, i'd want a fixed blade, preferably H1. aqua or rock salt.

if are set on carrying a folder, i'd say... pacific salt.

+1....from your list the Military; the Endura is a great knife too.

For a folder. Military. Sal gave one to a Tactical knives writer for a review down in South America with instructions to beat it up. It passed with flying colors.

I would say Military CE

In case of the plain edge get really dull for any reason, you still have the SE part for back up, if you only carry ONE knife on a trip that's it :p

From your list I'd prefer Military PE in S90V variation. Why? First, it is lightweight folder. Second, it is durable. Third, this knife will be easy to fix, if something goes wrong. I mean, Liner Lock, surely, will be much easier to fix than Back Lock. Also, it is more durable (except Chinook). If you want to get additional strength from Milie's Liner Lock, you can push a stick between liner and carbon fiber, transforming Milie into half fixed knife. :D S90V will be great choice for its edge retention.

Grunt, the trek is going to through parts of Yunnan Province, China. I only worry about "emergencies" because this is not exactly a high end, highly organized trek with Western standards...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I think I'm leaning towards bringing my military (old S30V PE).

I'd recommend something a little off the beaten path; the waved Endura 4 in SE.

It's not too heavy, not too expensive, and should serve you very well.

The wave feature is cool, and could come in handy if you need to get your knife out in a hurry. I like the blade shape better than the regular Endura, but the wider, shallower serrations (unique to the waved E4 & D4) are what make it special. They offer the usual advantages in edge retention and cutting tough materials, but cut smoother, with less snagging, than other :spyder: serrations.

I'd have a hard time choosing between PE and SE, if I were in you shoes. The waved E4 SE is a great compromise between the 2, IMO. I am really pleased with mine, and carry it every day.

That article greatly convinced me to buy a Milli - that's what I'd go with.

I think my user name says which I would choose. However, if the H1 Spyderhawk existed and was out now I would probably choose that because of the large size.
