Re: Earth is round and orbits the sun. FACTS.

With reference to ice cubes floating in a glass of water: "The water level remains the same when the ice cube melts. A floating object displaces an amount of water equal to its own weight. Since water expands when it freezes, one ounce of frozen water has a larger volume than one ounce of liquid wat...

Re: Earth is round and orbits the sun. FACTS.

I remember the coming ice age. Then there was the hole in the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect that would destroy the earth. Now it turns out that greenhouse gasses actually cool the stratosphere and have nothing to do with climate change. https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/climateqa/are-t...

Re: Earth is round and orbits the sun. FACTS.

Well, the earth curves away at about 8 inches per mile. http://www.davidsenesac.com/Information/line_of_sight.html If a person could stand in one place and observe a point 15 miles in one direction and 15 miles in the opposite direction, that's 30 miles times 8 inches or 240 inches which would be a ...

Re: Earth is round and orbits the sun. FACTS.

In 2018 I observed this phenomena while holding down a beer on the deck of our rental beach house. At that time I didn't say anything to anyone because I did not want to sound like a loon. In the meantime, I Googled around and found this scholarly thread on the topic by people much smarter than I am...

This panoramic photo I made last summer of the Gulf of Mexico shows the curvature of the earth. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/RETaKGThPmDrNC_UFgXAA5lEmescFbBj5QlBG8re2Kj90IHFg1fLdFUg4ZhcvhJyDX_MrijX_VYLWD-3Z-ddsvYP-7THu6Hz4naWpO2jn4MmNcGVTwhLWxdVm7mbdI0-PicrXuUSwju8i4bcmobvXSeScz4JACNa13ab0nL2xW...

Re: Bottle Openers

Recently, I acquired from the Counter Intelligence Corps Association a bottle opener with the Military Intelligence branch insignia . This is a design that would be easy for Spyderco to do, laser cut steel and a black "bug". https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/p6oN1NT6zlUNX9xrl225bo7jfNBgOD2quZ1TnnSRe...

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

A turn for the bitter. Sumerian's Gold Award winning double-hopped IPA may be a more sessionable 5.6% ABV, but at 95 IBUs (International Bittering Units) one really has to like their hops. Tasty, but in the immortal words of Dirty Harry, "A man's got to know his limitations." https://lh3.googleuserc...

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

At 8.5% alcohol by volume, one is indeed stepping onto a slippery slope. As much as I like beer, some high ABV brews become almost undrinkable. Maybe it would be better if I was at their tavern in Bluffton, South Carolina pairing it with a hamburger. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/T2RfpivoOj4NNjm...

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

Eureka ! I found a silver can. Now all I need is the gold can to collect all four. It's a beautiful day, sunny cold and windy. I had to pour some of the beer back into the can to keep the can from blowing away. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/njPlnJgbCOAK626f-tDxDpluPyfPOW48tbsNlXZnkAkslURvlglUp0w...

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

Sumerian is the oldest linguistic record, and those Mesopotamians knew how to brew beer. The brewing company of the same name in craft-beer rich Washington state knows how, too, with this Silver Award Winner in the Best of the Northwest and Washington Beer Awards. Lord knows I needed some of this. h...

Tequila and Federales - Bryon Bass waxes nostalgic on the Endura in Overland Journal

Expedition Portal reprinted an article from Overland Gear Guide selecting five Best of Breed pocket knives. The author had fond memories of an adventure with the Endura but related no personal experiences in reviews of the other four. https://expeditionportal.com/straight-to-the-point/ https://exped...

Re: 1950s/60s TV Shows That Were Truly Ahead Of Their Time

Cosby has been ranked as one of the best stand-up comedians of all time, which is remarkable considering that his material was clean and relatable to all people. Whereas other comedians relied on shock value, vulgarity or ethnocentric or gendercentric material, Cosby related experiences from growing...

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

This is the third year Keystone Light has had the hunt for the legendary orange can. The standard can is blue. The previous two years, I scored an orange can after drinking about 100 cans of beer. This year I scored the "ultra rare Blaze can" on the first 30 pack. But Keystone has upped the ante by ...

Re: Your views on machetes?

My Woodman's Pal is short and handy, has some weight behind it and cuts better than a machete in my experience. But I've never owned a serious machete. Just the cheap ones like from Harbor Freight. The surveyors who surveyed my place had long machetes in leather sheaths. From time to time, they touc...

Re: 1950s/60s TV Shows That Were Truly Ahead Of Their Time

This conversation reminds me of a Bill Cosby stand up routine. When he was a boy, his father would yell, "Turn that crap down." After he had a son of his own, he yelled, "Turn that crap down." We identify with the entertainers, music, and movies of our youth. Each generation that follows has a diffe...

At first glance with the target sights and rib I thought it was a K38 Masterpiece
but then noticed the shroud on the ejector rod. That's what made me Google it up.
With all the hammerless polymer pistols these days, it's refreshing to see a fine wheelgun.

Re: The Tactical Bottle Opener: Spyderco ClipiTool Standard

Don't pay the ransom, I escaped ! It's been grim around here and don't worry. I have not gone on the wagon. For you youngsters in the audience, that refers to the Temperance Wagon and the movement leading up to prohibition. But I digress. It's difficult finding new alcoholic beverages in my hometown...

Re: Collectibles

The PBS Antiques Roadshow has been showing reruns from decades ago. They include current estimates under the original estimates. Most of them are lower. Collectibles can be fads and quickly lose their luster. And there is no limit to cranking out new collectibles. There is also the generational fact...
