Tough to imagine what happened...it was around my neck the whole time and was not cracked when I used it a couple of times on the water. The only thing I can imagine is that I "smashed" it against my chest while loading/unloading boats. It really is a very thin piece of steel right there.

Anybody crack a SPOT?

I was unpacking from a kayak-fishing trip yesterday and noticed that my micarta SPOT has a small crack at the top of the finger hole. I have no idea how it happened, but now that I look closely at it, that is a very thin piece of metal. It seems that any kind of pressure sideways at that point could ...

Use 'em hard! Short of wearing the serrations down (I wouldn't know, I use PEs) the Dodo is going to stand up to anything you would reasonably use it for. I think that short-bladed knives are less prone to damage simply because there is less leverage against the pivot in hard use. I have been ...

DLC does that. I have a Simonich Crowfoot with DLC that spots terribly - I haven't found anything that cleans them off easily. I have removed the black coating from several BMs - hard to do well.

Nice knife, shame about the spine. The one I have sits in the drawer because I just don't like using it for anything more than super light duty. The "sharpened" spine makes it very uncomfortable for any cutting that requires me to shift my thumb to the back of the blade. I always look at it and ...

At first I thought "why mess with perfection?" The native is the best value in the knife world, great ergos, and easy to carry - both because of the price and the slimness of the construction. I used to call for a G10 version, but realised that unless it is done like the Dodo, I just wouldn't carry ...

I love the blade shape, but the points between the choils seem too pronounced for me - reminds me of the Native lll, which I don't like for hard cutting because of those points.

Have to agree about the swedge - the Native is my EDC, but the swedge has always looked "unfinished", as if someone didn ...

I prefer the Original Native. I found the Native III's handle too "grip specific". It's great when holding it in a typical grip, but the choils dig into my palms when I rotate the knife to use in other grips. IMHO the S30 Native is the best value in the knife-world.

1. i am aware of people bleeding out from being cut while trying to free themselves from a sprayskirt. what would the outcomes have been if it were not attempted? i wonder how many haven't been hurt at all by this, but rather it saved their life. the accounts of those seem lacking. how well does ...

Maybe I can shed some light on the "pointy tip" debate on this knife. As a whitewawter paddler, I see two distinct scenarios for a rescue knife:

1) Immediate extraction from a rope/webbing/clothing that has me, or another paddler, trapped in such a way as to be immediatly life threatening (Head ...

I'm amazed at how many closet Socialists there are in this group considering we are all knife knuts.

Ok, so is a spearpoint any more or less utiliarian than drop point?[/b]

I wonder if that might be it. Years ago, when I was still in outdoor retail, I ordered a Native. In a shop where virtually everyone carried a Delica or Endura, I was asked "Why would you want a knife that looks like you want ...

I have a drawer full of knives that rarely get carried because of the Native. For 3 years I did the "Ah, xxxx will be the perfect EDC (the only kind of knife I am really interested in) for me" thing.....lots of trades, and buying on the forums. The S30 Native just keeps ending up in my pocket. For ...

Well, I have tried lots of different ones and always come back to the S30 Native. I like a slim knife, and the blade shape handles everything that I do. If the Dodo was a better slicer, I would probably stick with it, but it just doesn't stand up in the food prep dept.

I think the most significant difference amongst the three is that the PE retains the reverse-s edge profile so much better than the SE models. Both the SE blades look to have almost none of the "belly" that the PE blade does - almost mini-hawkbills.

The results make some sense really, although I am surprised at the "performance" of the Sebbie. I think the other results are really a comparison of the edge geometries - especially where the Strider and the Manix are concerned.

A moment of silence please...

....my blue, PE Dodo seems to have flown the coop. I fear that it somehow escaped my pocket while changing in the ski-trail parking lot. :( Days of looking through pockets, drawers, and pack pockets have not turned the little bird up. I fear that it may be gone for good.

Who would have ever guessed ...
