Re: A little sod work (Vagabond - AUS-6)
Well heat treated, low carbide steels are nice for mud cutting. I've had very similar experiences with my Jeremy McCullen 14C28N fighter when using it for weeding. Even with a 10 dps edge, it just blunts and doesn't roll or chip.

Re: Tatanka vs Voyager lock strength test By Cold Steel
I thought it was a pretty interesting video that managed to show the durability of both of these knives. Yeah, it was a commercial and Cold Steel was talking smack, but this is nothing new. Thompson built his company off of that sort of marketing, I doubt it will hurt Spyderco's sales a whole lot ...

If you are willing to put up with the rattling, the Spyderco CBN rods are an excellent pocket sharpener, BTW.

Re: SpyderPac - not completely impressed
That's the one complaint I have about my SpyderPac as well (also a large one). Everything seems well made on it except for the rod. Mine arrived broken as well, just an inch or two off center. Originally I had planned on hanging it in my closet, but since the rod isn't solid, the 'Pac sort of folds ...

Cliff: The less exotic Crystolon stones will work well on high vanadium steels too, Phil Wilson is probably the most famous proponent of those.

Re: why not more S110V/S90V?
There is more to a knife than the blade steel. I'd rather have a knife with a reliable lock, well thought out ergonomics, and a clear purpose to the design than something designed to be pretty in S90V or S110V.
For how I use my knives, edge retention is almost irrelevant as I am going to sharpen it ...

A Z-Finit (aka LC200, aka Cronidur 30) Military would be pretty nice.

Don't these steels rust if you breathe on them and don't immediately dry them?
I had a Japanese sushi knife in some variety of traditional steel (carbon steel core, mild steel clad), it would rust quickly if not wiped down. Then again, that is a common element of Japanese cooking and even if it ...

Re: Stellite 6k vs any high alloy/high carbide steel
If Stellite behaves any similar to SM-100, the results will be something comparable to a titanium knife with significantly lower toughness.

Re: Spyderco Military... 7 days later
I own a Black G10 Military that I installed standoffs on. It is probably my favorite general use folder. Not a real precision cutter compared to an Opinel or slip joint, but with a bit more durability and wider scope of use. I have a fair variety of knives, but the Military always seems to find its ...

Re: Pry bars and Knives
Very interesting idea.
I've never really felt to the need to carry pry bars myself, usually probing or scraping is the grubbiest work I do, and something like a Leatherman Marlin Spike is usually sufficient. Of course, if I am using my knife at the time, I will use it as well.

Re: Reprofiling!
I'm a former proponent of coarse diamond abrasives, but I much prefer SiC stones for that sort of heavy work. Diamond stones are a lot less tolerant of high pressure than SiC stones, even fairly friable ones like the Norton. They work well for finishing and rapid resharpening, but you have to be ...

Awesome steel in terms of ease of sharpening and ability to take a high sharpness. Spyderco needs to hurry up and make a kitchen knife or two in this steel.

Now that this has dragged on for two pages...
As I understand it G10 is glass fiber impregnated with resin, micarta is fabric or paper impregnated with resin. Beyond that I really don't care about the minutiae of what resin is used in which. I really don't think that the average user would notice ...
