Between these two steels, which is more corrosion resistant and most importantly why?
To answer simply, steel 2 will have better corrosion resistance than steel 1, since the matrix contains more chromium, molybdenum and a little nitrogen (Unless, of course ...

Re: MangaSlice - The Next Breakthrough in Knife Steel
Really. Basically, as I expected. A slightly higher niobium content is balanced by an additional amount of carbon to form carbides.

Re: MangaSlice - The Next Breakthrough in Knife Steel
Well, the new steel is on sale. An incomplete composition of the new steel was also published.

Closer to K390 but stainless.

This is very similar to my steel, the properties and composition of which I published in early April on this forum. This is very suspicious. https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?t=96410

Re: VG XEOS
Can we make general statements like the reduction of carbon and the increase in chromium means that more chromium will remain in solution as compared to VG-10?
Yes.
What about the vanadium? There is more of it, but less carbon. I know that alloying elements "compete" with each other to bind ...

Honestly can't wait for WaifuWear to drop. Such an exciting time in steels we get to live in.
I don’t understand how you found out about my secret development? Maybe I should update my tin foil hat, it's old and probably not working properly. Okay, I'll tell you a little about her.

Can you level a King water stones with glass and wet/dry sandpaper? I use that when I am doing furniture building, but obviously to flatten small pieces of wood.
If you are so comfortable, then why not?
I just don't think this stone needs sandpaper, it's a soft stone and an abrasive that comes ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
Figure if you had a nice big surface to set an edge and to flatten whetstones it’s a win win.
This is not a good idea. This will cause premature wear of the diamond insert. Either level stones or sharpen knives.
It is better to use either very cheap diamond plates for this, or to level the ...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I have the KING KW65 1000/6000, it has a different grit on each side. It works well for my chisel set but it was my understanding that harder steels needed Diamond or CBN to "cut" the steel otherwise you could be there all day with them.
As I understand it, you still don't have knives with ...

2 King Whet stones I use for chisels
What is the grain size of these stones?
What model?
Why don't you use these stones?
I had a king 800 grit. This is a great stone. I sharpened both k390 and zdp-189 on it.

Well it seems I'm wrong when it comes to silicon carbide being able to cut the vanadium carbides in blade steel. Science of Sharp has some good pictures of carbides in K390 and Maxamet being cut by silicon carbide. Might pick up a Norton Crystolon and give it a try.
It has me thinking about a ...

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
t's just that it might not do it optimally because the silicon carbide will not cut the vanadium carbides. Rather, it'll cut the metal surrounding the carbides, and at some point the carbides will either be extracted or break from the stress.
Whether it's optimal or not, I don't know. These are ...

As a clear example of the effectiveness of silicon carbide stones. This is a blade made of steel s60v with a hardness of 61HRc

Re: CPM 15v Manix 2
The hardest silicon carbide is 2400-2600 vickers but sharpening stones could use softer grades. Where as vanadium carbide is 2800-3000 vickers. CBN comes close to 5000 vickers. So with those values known why choose SiC over diamond and cBN?
A few of my theses.
1. The hardness of silicon carbide ...

Re: Just cuts
Those are some pretty impressive videos. Is your rolled up magazine video a fresh edge, or was that after the wood cutting?
The knife was after sharpening. But after woodworking, usually, the knife becomes a little dull and it would be enough for cutting a magazine.
