Re: Sal - a request for spyderco fixed blades

The thread asks for more fixed blades, but the conversation is more about sheaths and G-clips.

Are there any fixed blade requests?

I'd say a classic bowie design, something like the 119, but using a higher end steel, G10 handles and a true full tang.

Maybe a sprint run of the Respect ...

Re: Idea For A Fixed Blade

The only available bowie I've seen that is somewhat similar is the Natchez from CS. For the price though, I'd rather the Respect or Province. I'm not sold on the cable tang used in the Natchez, it's 3V though and looks rather stout.

I think there's a market for classic style Bowies, think Respect ...

I missed the boat on both the Respect and the Province. I've been hoping for a re-run ever since.

When Is Carbon Steel The Right Choice

Just trying to learn some more on steel type applications.

Cost aside, when is a carbon steel the correct choice over a high end stainless? Case in point, I see some companies now producing what is basically a Kabar in stainless steels such as S30V and Magnacut.

Is there any situation for a ...

Idea For A Fixed Blade

Just thought I'd post this up here. I've seen a few Randall knives and thought of two models that maybe Spyderco could look into putting their spin on.

- Randall Model 14 Attack
- Randall Model 12 Smithsonian Bowie

Two iconic American knives. I think it would be really cool to see them in a ...

Re: Different knife different day, or one knife for life?

I have a Civilian that stays on me 24/7. I've carried the same Buck 110 for ~15 years, it's started to develop lock rock, so I'm looking to replace it with a Native Chief.

My fixed blade will change depending on my attire and location.

Re: Hunters!

My primary would be a fixed blade, simply due to the fact that it's easier to clean.

Personally we bring three knives each hunt. That way we can rotate if one becomes dull and another guy can sharpen.

We go for deer, moose, black bear, wolf, and coyote.

Re: China

For me, I look at quality first. If the country of origin is the US, Canada, or Europe, that's a plus. I'm not into politics. I judge people by their workmanship.

With that said, I've never seen a Chinese made product that could stack up to its North American or European counter-part.

Sal, as a ...

Re: Deployment Timing

Hi Civilian_G10,

As mentioned, we don't shy away from knives used as weapons, but discussion is mostly for defense, not offence. Obviously, we have many models that were designed with defense in mind.

I agree with Mike , and would also suggest training. Depending on where you are, there are ...

Dear civilian_g10:

I think you are spot on in challenging yourself to deploy your folders quickly and positively. That is one element of defensive knife training that many instructors gloss over--or they focus on training and demonstrating with non-concealed fixed-blade trainers to avoid the ...

Absolutely! I didn't mean sound like it's a taboo topic that's not allowed. I only meant, it's not a very common subject of conversation. That's all.
No worries. I'm obviously new here, so I didn't want to ruffle any feathers.

Re: Return of the Warrior and/ or Respect?

Depends. If this is a "Fighting knife" serrations might "grab" clothing and make it cut less.
Iirc meat cutting test on the meat sleeve by a forumite showed that a non serrated blade was superior to a serrated blade.
I would like some tough steel so it doesn´t break when bone is in the way of ...

Re: Deployment Timing

First and foremost, my apologies if the topic/ discussion is off topic here. I was leery at first, so I didn't add context.

I personally look at both a knife and a firearm as a tool, firstly - I come from a hunting background. I follow the philosophy of - I'd rather have it and not need it, then ...

How can it be faster with no clip?
It's not, I said it's 2/10ths slower with no clip.

Deployment Timing

What is considered a good deployment time?

From hands at chest height to draw and locked, I hit a consistent 2.32 seconds with a pocket clip, and 2.52 seconds with pocket carry - no clip.

Hi Jim,

My history information on Michael Echanis mostly came from Bob. I never met the man and I heard that his later years were tough on him.

If I were to consider making another run of the Warrior, I might be inclined to serrate it?

sal

If we do a "Sprint" of a previously made model, we have to change something so as not to confuse it with prior models.

sal
Would a change of steel type suffice? Maybe a boltaron sheath as well.
