Re: Is Maxamet from Taiwan better than from USA?
One explanation is that the Sage is a smaller knife (shorter blade and shorter handle) than the Manix and PM2's. As a result, you'll generate less leverage when you apply lateral force, and are less likely to break it.
A better comparison is perhaps Sage vs Para 3?
My view for using any tool is ...

Re: 8Cr Alternative
if you pay attention to forums where budget knives are discussed, there are two things that should stand out to you.
1. everyones knives look pristine, and when they discuss using them, the roughest use they tend to throw them at is breaking down their amazon boxes
2. they are completely ...

Re: spyderco kitchen knives?
Thanks for the replies yall. Do all the knives do well with quick vertical dicing with a pinch grip ? (idk the right term) If so, i'm thinking of getting the gyuto because of the extra length.
And just an afterthought, how well do these knives, specifically the bd1n, handle neglect such as leaving ...

spyderco kitchen knives?
does anyone have any experience with the santoku,bd1n gyutos and/or bunkas in terms of use, slicy-ness, balance, front end sharpness retention? Also, what is the bte like? I looked on the website and the gyuto's secondary bevel lines in specific appear a bit thicker than the others mentioned.

Did you match the primary bevel angle when regrinding or did you increase it to keep the spine's thickness?

H2 performance for fishing
How does H2 SE perform when being kind of abused? Btw, if you are a little squeamish about harvesting fish, id recommend clicking off.
When I harvest fish, i have to dispatch them by sticking the knife through their pretty hard skull and twisting as well as sometimes going through their rib cage ...

Re: What is the best steel for retaining high sharpness?
Rex 45. The fine grain structure and extremely high hardness gives it a very long lasting super scary edge in my experience. Rex 45 is pretty much all fine edge.
I have heard of rex 45 holding a good edge for a long time before, but only once. Have you used hap40 before? composition wise, they ...

Re: What is the best steel for retaining high sharpness?
Also, what makes a steel retain that super sharp edge as opposed to "breaking down" into a working edge?
Differences in retained austenite, carbide size/volume, hardness, stress/fatigue, grain growth, plate martensite vs lath and heat build up during processing.
Lastly, your sharpening ...

Re: What is the best steel for retaining high sharpness?
I think how you sharpen matters as much as anything. stropping the same apex back to shaving sharp over and over won't give you the same 90%+ sharpness retention as stones.
as far as steel, in my experience high hardness lower carbide seems to do best here.
Thanks, that makes more sense. maybe ...

What is the best steel for retaining high sharpness?
What are good steels for retaining a very sharp, shaving edge? I've heard many opinions such as super blue/blue super (is there a difference?), cruwear, AEB-L, 52100, etc.
Also, what makes a steel retain that super sharp edge as opposed to "breaking down" into a working edge?

Thank you for the responses
The only reason I'm still held up on 4v is because Mr. Houston has these videos of 4v doing some crazy things:

he says that 4v's hardness lets it resist deformation (plastic and fracture)

3v vs 4v?
I've been seeing a few mentions of 3v in a Spyderco knife. I asked and got a reply saying that 4v is better for hardenability, but 3v is better for rough use.

Re: Why CPM 3V
i've never used 3v or 4v before, but i've heard that 4v is better because the higher attainable hardness means more resistance to plastic deformation.

Did a 6 hour hike to Comet falls and the surrounding area. Carried the LeafJumper in my 5th pocket where it got soaked in sweat. Not sure why mine isn’t rusting like others are reporting. All I can figure out is that I wipe it down with Frog Lube oil before I leave home and use a lightly Frog Lube ...

Re: 15v question
For me, my 15v has exceeded expectations in corrosion resistance. When I worked outside and became drenched in sweat, there wasn't any rust to be wiped off at the end of the day. I did use a light coat of mineral oil though.
